mount for TV-102 ... gem? new
      #4543046 - 04/25/11 12:19 PM

Just picked up a TV-102 and looking for a modest mount, visual only. I don't want a beast.

Looking at the CG-4. The sale price at Astronomics is very attractive. Would that handle the TV-102 well?
Only need tracking, no Goto.

Other options ... GPDX, CG5, GM8 ...

Would like to keep cost < $500.

Thx,
Rob

the GP works well, You defintiely do not need a GPDX

LXD75 or CG5 can be had used <$500. GoTo is a bonus. GP's can be had for ~$200 but the motors and other add-ons quickly pile up!

Is the GP similar to the CG4 in capacity or, is it more similar to the CG5?

GP is closer to the CG-5 which is rated for 35 lbs. Great mount for visual with that size refractor, will be stable.

the CG5 is the clone of the GP

35#???
that must be the load for scope and counterweights. I think more than 20# of scope would be too much.

That's what Celestron is rating them for now and I've got 32 lbs on my ASGT with no problems. Visual only.

Do you think an SVP would work? How does the SVP compare to a CG5 or GP?

How about an iOptron miniTower? It's outside my budget but, I like its features.

The SVP would work with a 102, I would place it between a CG-4 and CG-5 for capacity.

Rob,

I use the MiniTower with my 102 and it's a very good combination.

Ed,
How stable is the Minitower at planetary mags ... let's say 200X or so?
I can't stand the "jiggles" when I tough the focuser.

Rob,

It's been fine for me. When I adjust the focus it settles fairly quickly and the tracking is smooth enough to cause no jiggles for me.

Ed
