From the Stellafane website:

"We are sorry to report that our planned keynote speakers, The Meteorite Men, informed us on June 3 that they will not be able to speak at the convention due to the need to film for their third season in Europe during that time. We will announce our keynote speakers as soon as arrangements have been settled."

.....but..... they also say:

"We are adding more sessions than ever before, expanding the kids program to include sessions for teens and more than doubling the number of tech talks."

I won't particularly miss the Meteorite Men. I don't watch their show, and would much prefer someone who has something to do with telescopes.
Love the expanding of the session too! Can't wait to see the program.

Not sure if I'll be able to make it, money's a bit tight this year. This is my first year with a telescope so I'd love to, so I'm hoping I'll be able to make my way there.

Well I'm registered for 3 nights, and unless "the creeks rise" I expect to be there. I hope that they get a good speaker.

31 days to go!

The replacement “Keynote Talk” is: “Pluto, Comets, and the Kuiper Belt: Taking an Inventory”, given by “Jane Luu, a member of the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and co-discoverer of the Kuiper Belt”.

There are some interesting presentations, including the usual ATM stuff, plus workshops: “AAVSO Workshop: Monitoring Bright Stars for Fun and Profit”, and a return of the DSLR imaging workshop, plus other new areas.

They now have a schedule up: web page

A note on Stellafane 2011 registration:

Some friends and I were a little confused after registering via PayPal a while back when we recently got the usual mailed postcard about registration being open. I almost registered twice! One friend called and they said that the postcards go out to anyone who registered *last year*, or requested one. They do not cross-check with the "already registered on-line" list.

Bottom line: If you already registered via on-line link, don’t worry or re-register when you get the postcard.

Scope-at-home: My greatest fear is leaving my eyepieces (or something else critical) home, and sitting under a clear dark sky with a useless telescope. I once did drive 6 hours to a dark site only to realize that I had left my eyepieces at home, and a few years ago I watched a couple sit looking at their dewed-up SCT – they had left the hood and anti-dew strap home. Dew can get bad at Stellafane if it clears up after period of rain.

I’ve been buying 20 bucks worth of Stellafane raffle tickets since 1995 and the only thing I’ve won is a paperback book. One year at NEAF I did win the STM’s donated “free weekend pass to Stellafane”. One of my friends won the “big pile of books” worth about $400 or more a few years ago. This is the year I’m going to win the Ethos!!!

Other Stellafane mistakes:

Eating too much of that greasy food;

Driving thru a mud hole;

Going to bed early if it’s cloudy/raining (it’s sure to clear up);

Spending too much at the swap meet and then having to haul your “treasures” back to your campsite;

Forgetting to bring 4 seasons of clothes (gets cold their on clear nights and hot and muggy during the day)

…… and the biggest mistake of all:

Not going because the weather forecast is for rain – which means it’s sure to clear up. You can have a great time at Stellafane even with no observing.

I have been there 18 years in a row. I have not decided as of this moment if I am going or not. I am favoring not going. I have 4 kids to tag along and it gets expensive to get a hotel for a couple of nights. I figure the whole trip could cost $700 for all expenses.

My wife called the Holiday Inn in Springfield this morning and they have rooms left...they were always booked months before the event....a statement about the sad shape of the economy.
