Critique, please?
      #4553870 - 04/30/11 05:42 PM Attachment (42 downloads)

Here's my first attempt at sketching. I noticed more activity on the sun than I had the past couple of weeks so I thought I'd try my hand at sketching.

How did I do? What did I do wrong? Any tips for improvement?

Thanks,
Dave

(I think it's kinda cool to get a tan while observing. )

I can't think of much you did wrong. You recorded the locations and sizes of the active regions quite well. I'm not too familiar with how the sun looks in white light, so I can't give suggestions.

That's look very good to me. Even more impressive as a first sketch!
Maybe you can fill the penumbra (grey erea around a sunspot)? Put graphite on an other paper, take some graphite with a blending stump and fill the penumbra with it. Good luck.

A very good first go at sketching. I also observe with a C6-R, a great scope.

Dave, try shading the inside perimeter of the circle lightly with pencil and then blending with a stump (or a clean grease-free finger) around the edge to simulate the view of solar limb darkening. Use a narrow-edged eraser to clean up the outside of the circle. Takes some extra time, but gives a great '3D' look to solar sketches.

Thanks for all the support and advice. I've never had a talent for drawing, but this was quite fun and I think I'll keep at it.

Thanks!

Looks like an awesome sketch! I would also suggest the slight darkening around the interior edges to represent the limb-darkening.

Clear Skies,
Brandon Doyle
