Unistar Deluxe vs. Discmount DM6
      #4559946 - 05/03/11 07:41 PM

I am looking to upgrade to a heavier mount. I am considering the Unistar Deluxe or Discmount DM6, on a heavy surveyor tripod. I will be using a W.O. ZenithStar 70mm refractor, Celstron C6 sct, and (in the future) 4-or 5-inch refractor. I appreciate hearing any comments on how these two mounts compare.

Thank you.

I've had the DM-4 and the Unistar Deluxe but not the DM-6. I think the DM-4 will hold any of those scopes mentioned and it's a lot smaller than a DM-6. The Unistar is also a very nice, smooth mount albeit, less refined than the DM-4.

I haven't used a Unistar, but I have used a Discmount, and I can't imagine anything better. I would go for the DM-6 if you think you will want a 5" refractor on it at some point, but part of that may be my inclination to over mount scopes.

I have a unistar deluxe, and it would carry all of your loads very easily. The DM is definitely and upgrade, but with upgrades, there is a price. In fact I am looking at downsizing to a smaller grab and go set up, and just got quote on a DM4 at a little over $1200 with encoders. This would compare to a Unistar deluxe at $775. A DM6 is even more, alot more.... So I think both would work, owning a Unistar, I think the DM is an upgrade, but I cant rationalize the cost for less weight capacity.....

For the scopes you will be using, go with the Unistar, not worth the extra cost for the DM6 to me.

I've never used the Discmount, but I do currently have a Unistar Deluxe on a UA heavy wood surveyor tripod. It's a very nice setup and should be more than enough for any of the scopes you mention. It carries a heavy Mak-Cass with a small H-alpha scope piggy-backed with no problem. Very smooth motions even at higher powers.

Thank you to everyone who replied to this thread. Your comments are much appreciated.

What about slow-movement control, such as tracking a planet? How do these two mounts compare?

I have never used a DM4 or -6, but with my SV102ABV (4" f/7.75 doublet apo) mounted on a Unistar I have no trouble tracking planets at 200x, despite the lack of slow-motion controls. While I have no doubt that the DM series of mounts may be more refined (based upon comments that I've heard from other users), I've always been very happy with my Unistar and have never felt the need to upgrade.

I've tracked manually at 300x with my Unistar Deluxe with no problems. If you level the tripod and balance the scope well in Alt. the Unistar works very well at high powers.

Unistar Deluxe should serve you well. I have no problem manually tracking at high magnification with mine.

I'll second the opinion on the DM-4. It works well with a 130mm refractor.

Bill

I third the opinion for the DM-4! You won't be disappointed. Call Tom Peters at DiscMounts if you have specific concerns -- he's a great guy who will happily answer your questions with no strings attached.

A DM4 should hold a 130mm refractor, depending upon the scope. I got the DM6 as it wont shift when changing out big EPs like a 31t5. The DM4 may not be able to hold a scope steady when exchanging big EPs.

The DM6 will also allow you more wiggle room for a bigger scope as well. I can mount a TEC140 on a DM6 without it blinking.

To JumboFlex:

A 5 oz ep (5T6) to 26 oz ep (26T5) and back again presents no problem for the DM-4. It'll stay steady as a rock during the swap. Do that with the 31T5 and you're going to get movement but it's relatively slow and gradual...certainly controllable. That's what is nice about the friction disc design. The discs are always applying some resistence; so, you don't get the hard tail-dive/nose-dive crashes that other mounts exhibit when the scope becomes unbalanced.

To BobinKy:

If you have not already done so, read Tom Trusock's CN reports on the DM-4 and DM-6

Tom

I compared the DM6 to the T-Rex at NEAF and decided to purchase the T-Rex which has slow motion controls. I would definitely consider this mount when deciding which will best meet your needs.

I decided upon the Universal Astronomics Unistar Heavy Deluxe Altaz and Heavy Wood Tripod with Fixed spreader. Pleased with the purchase--works for me.

Heavy Deluxe? Is that different that the Unistar Deluxe? Show us a picture when you get it!
