Regarding Orion Service
      #4564235 - 05/05/11 09:15 PM

I'm not sure if this is even the right forum for this post but I am going on my 4th Orion mount head in less than a month.

First Mount: Clearly used. Eye lash on the polar finder scope. Inside packaging damaged and taped together. Box damaged and re-sealed multiple times.

Second Mount: DEC axis gear grinding and clicking issue. Requested and received a replacement.

Third Mount: Clearly used. Boxed damaged and re-sealed multiple times. DC Power adapter is different than the others I received. No manual. Inside packaging damaged. Screws are not in bags but attached to the mount bar.

What kind of service is this? When I purchase new, I expect factory sealed products. I'm done with this and will return the entire package.

Sorry for venting. As for the productive part of this post: Anyone else have a similar experience or has Orion gone completely down hill recently? What are other, better options in this price range which I can use with Auto-Guiding? Thanks.

I'm not a big fan of Orion (for reasons of my own) but it does surprise me to hear you are having these type of issues. Orion's reputation on the service side is much better than the experience you've described.

I think i would get them on the phone and start from the very beginning. If you've lost confidence, then ask for a refund for the defective gear.

Worst case scenario, let them know you will contact the BBB concerning your experience.

Again, despite me not being an Orion fan, I am surprised to hear of an experience like this from them.

My past experiences with Orion telescope has always been good. I bought a goto alt/az mount that was not working properly. It was a clearance item, but everyone bent over backwards to get the answer to me, including one of the managers calling me several times, and taking a personal interest in it. For a clearance item!

My advice would be to call them and ask to speak to a manager, and describe to them exactly what you've been going through. If they're the same people I dealt with last year, they will do their best to get you fixed up.

My wife had some problems with the purchase of Orion equipment via Amazon.com that was directly linked to Orion before the holidays. She ended up purchasing via OPT and they shipped right away.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably be looking into another brand.

Are you discussing Orion Telescope and Binoculars (United States) or Orion Optics UK?

I have had quality control problems with Orion but the service has been very good.
Lucky for you you did not need Meade or Celestron service!

Several years ago, I purchased an Orion XT8 for my nephews. After they'd had it for a year or so, the plastic tube cover got broke. I called Orion to see about purchasing a replacement, but they wouldn't sell me one, simply because I had purchased the telescope from a local retailer who sells Orion telescopes, rather than having purchased it directly from Orion! I wasn't asking for a gimmie, I was offering to buy it. go figure.
