Orion Eq-2 question
      #4567461 - 05/07/11 02:06 PM Attachment (27 downloads)

I just purchased a scope on an Orion Eq-2 mount. There is one lever on the mount that does not appear to do anything as assembled. This first picture shows the wheel for the RA adjustment, with the lever behind it.

This second picture shows the lever attached to a cam, but the cam does not touch anything, and if it supposed to clamp to the nearest shaft, the cam ramp appears to be in the wrong position. Could anybody tell me what this lever is for, and possibly a picture of it working properly? The manual never mentions it. Thanks much.

Is it a cluth lock? If you push it until it pushes up against the white bushing? Does that lock the R/A adjustment? ..Joe

I think that is what it may be for, but if so it is mounted incorrectly for the cam ramp to rotate onto the bushing. I am considering taking it off, and replacing it the way I think it would work, but wanted to see if I was missing something first.

It is so that you can disengage motor.

Here is another picture with me holding the lever so the cam is fully exposed. If the lever is rotated 180 degrees so the lever is pointed down, then it looks like cam would lock on that bushing and have a stopping point so that it does not go too far. This would have the lever pointing down when not in use rather than it's current up position. While I can fine no reference for this lever from Orion, pictures that I have found show it to be in the correct orientation, but there it does nothing so I am just a bit confused and don't want to damage the mount just to clear up my confusion.

I guess I was posting at the same time you replied.

If I purchase the optional motor to allow tracking, this lever will attach to that?

I am considering buying that motor and am glad I am asking questions rather than just jumping in. A picture showing this with the motor would be greatly appreciated.

Update:

I just downloaded the manual for the motor drive and that explains it completely. I had only been looking at the manual for the mount as I assumed it would be described there. I am surprised that Orion puts this clutch on all mounts if it is only required for the drive motor, but most users probably end up buying the motor eventually anyway. Thanks much for the info.

I had only my mobile camera in hand but hopefully this will clear it somehow.

That shows exactly what I was curious about. This is one thing I really like about CN members, I can ask questions, some being pretty dumb, and I always get polite answers.

Thank you much
