Saturn 6 May 2011 new
      #4566385 - 05/06/11 10:57 PM Attachment (46 downloads)

Hi Everyone,

Been off the boards due to bad weather and too much work. Last night was a work night but clear so I stayed up late.
It's been five weeks (!) since I last saw Saturn so I was curious about any changes. Seeing was not good and I almost didn't do a sketch but decided to record what I could see.

The storm in the North Tropical Zone (NTrZ) is still visible as a bright area. The North Equatorial Belt (NEB) appeared broad (especially with the W#21 filter) and mottled.

The shadow of the rings on the globe has changed from inside to outside the rings. The shadow of the globe on the rings is now cast on the following side of the rings.

The sketch was done at the eyepiece using 2B and HB graphite pencils and a black charcoal pencil on Sol Robbins's template. After scanning I flipped the sketch to give the classical south up, preceding to the left view.

Michael,

A great looking sketch. I would call that a view worth waiting for. There is still time left for some great viewing evenings with Saturn.
When summer arrives you should get some well deserved observing time at your TSO.

Frank

Tom, Jef, Frank--thank you. I agree with you, Frank--there is still plenty to see on Saturn and it is culminating much closer to prime time now--almost two hours earlier than my last observation in March.

Ed,

You always have a great sense of modulating the finer contrasts which the end result brings about a sense of illumination in your work. I like the subtely you applied to cassinis.

Pete

Michael,

An excellent observation and report of Saturn along with Dione and Rhea. You have captured a good amount of detail over the globe and rings. I am glad that you were able to view Saturn after a month. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Carlos, T5--thank you very much. I hope things settle down in Chicagoland soon. Meanwhile, we all wish we were down with Carlos in sunny Florida.
