2 fast and 2x barlows new
      #45519 - 01/25/04 09:11 PM

I've got a question about the overall necessity for barlows. My scope has an f/ratio of f/4, and was supplied with a couple of barlows. Now I know that the barlows increase the effective focal length of the scope, and thus increase the effective power of the eyepiece placed into it. However, my question is, if I have both a 10mm and a 5mm eyepiece, is there any benefit to using the 2X barlow with the 10mm eyepiece over using the 5mm eyepiece alone?

I ask because I'm at a point in life where I can pretty much afford what I want (in the way of eyepieces anyway, and the barlows I have are somewhat suspect in my mind as to their quality. Should I replace the barlows or just get eyepieces in the focal length/power ranges that I want?

The main benefit of a Barlow lens is that you retain the eye relief of the ep you are putting into the Barlow. If you are stuck with eyeglasses like I am, this can be a very important factor! WW

I have always preferred the performance of a native eyepiece over a Barlowed eyepiece. That being said, sometimes it is advantageous to use a Barlow in order to maintain more comfortable eye relief.

I have a TV Big Barlow and a UO 3x Klee.

By the way, with that moniker you shoud have an avatar of Homer instead of Alfred.

I use Homer on other boards, very intuitive of you. I'll probably switch to Homer sometime soon. I recently picked up a couple of Televue Naglers (Radians) in preparation for Mars, which have excellent eye relief, even though they're 4mm and 5mm respectively. Just wondering if I should bother replacing my barlows...doesn't seem worth it.
