You know, echo, you could handle a 14-15" if it were a truss dob.
I saw that the heaviest part of my 16", at <50lbs, is lighter than the heaviest part of the LX200 12"... and it does not have to be hoisted 4' high on a wedge.

Matt,
I want a Celestron CGE 1400. I won't have to hoist it on a wedge, but am afraid I'd be too short and the angle too awkward. I would love to own a large truss dob someday. How compact is yours when you break it down?

It fits in the trunk of my station wagon (which is not large by American Standards - about like a Subaru Outback).
The rocker, which contains the secondary cage when traveling, is a little less than 22" square. The mirror box about 20". Sorry I don't have it at hand to make sure.

Matt,
That is close enough. Thanks for the information. I will be keeping my 10" scope no matter what else I may buy, so I need to be able to transport both scopes in one vehicle.

echo,
i also own a LX200 10" Meade,is yours a classic or gps? your observing reports are excellent ,they always give me a high benchmark to strive for when i observe with my 10" sct.in other threads you said that you had a OIII filter, and used it with good results.who made it? i have been wanting to get a OIII for years, but have no idea which make would work best with my scope.

Jerry,
Thanks for the kind words. My scope is the classic model too. My OIII is a Lumicon. I hear good things about Thousand Oaks filters as well. You may also want to look into a UHC filter. Some people prefer them to the OIII because it is easier to focus with them. Both make a big difference in viewing nebulae but the OIII blocks more starlight.

Nice report! There are way too many threads for me to keep track of. When I get a moment and snoop around I run into Everybody else. Where do you guys find the time!

Sorry about AZ Tina, but the food and company was good.

Ron,
We sure enjoyed meeting you and your lovely wife. Warpdhavoc and I drove down to Anaheim to hang out with Charlie Hein yesterday. It was a lot of fun. The weather there was a big improvement. Sunny and mid 70's. Wish you could have been there too.

Dang Peter A, is that a portrait of Cassini? I wanted to take it as my next impersonation!

I think Tina mentioned an important point. The hardest part of astronomy may not finding the right scope but finding a way to haul (and or lift / put together) the scope....
