Celestron AstroMaster Tripod new
      #4588215 - 05/18/11 08:23 AM

Has anyone had the chance to try Celestron's new mount?

http://www.celestron.com/c3/product.php?CatID=16&ProdID=762

I'm looking for an inexpensive grab and go alt/az mount and wonder if this might fit the bill. Scopes would be an 80mm ED and a 127mm Mak.

Thanks,
Rob

I have one of these mounts that came with the 70mm f/13 scope. If you have the scope well balanced and the tension on the alt axis set just right, it works quite well. You will want to tighten the bolts that connect the legs to the mount head to stiffen the setup. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult to collapse the legs, but it is necessary to make the whole mount much more stable. Look around the Internet for the the Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ and you can probably get the scope and mount for just a bit more than the mount itself. I got mine when it was $59.00, but I think they have gone up since then.

Also, I'm not sure you'll be happy using the 127 Mak on that mount. The mount would not be smooth enough to work with such a lnog f/l scope. The 80mm would be fine, though.

I've loved using one with a WO66 and 80. I have a couple NIB, and can do $59 on one. PM me if interested.

I find that mount to be TOTALLY useless for astronomy. It's fine for terrestrial viewing, but the juggling act required to get the tension right to keep the weight of the scope from falling back when aiming above the horizon is impossible.
