Balancing a side by side cradle new
      #4590637 - 05/19/11 01:16 PM

I'm planning on doing some deep sky imaging and to this end I bought an autoguider and a side by side cradle for my two telescopes. The trouble I'm having is getting the balance right. I have an 8" SCT mounted beside an 85 mm refractor (which will be used as my guidescope) but getting the balance right is proving to be an incredibly difficult challenge.

Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

There was just a thread on this last week or two, please search back a few pages or click my name and then "view all posts" link under my feedback. You'll see where I posted a link with a good tutorial.

I am building a side-by-side using the mount from Scopestuff.
I had to remove one of their 1/4-20 cap screws and use a counter sunk flat head screw to get the mount to move far enough to get the balance.

This link here is one of the best as to explaning just how to balance a S-b-S.

On a side note I did have one made by Anthony at ADM using Losmandy saddle for my Ultima 8 and a Vixen saddle for my Orion 80ED. It was chore not just due to the overall weight difference but the weight proportional of the SCT rear to front. In fact I sold my SCT W.O focuser due to it. I now just use a ADM Dual Saddle with a small W.O 66SD scope on top of the 80ED and Ultima 8.
