Another H-Alpha sketch from the backyard: AR 1176 new
      #4465836 - 03/22/11 09:16 AM

Another wonderfull sunny day in the Netherlands! This time I sketched the currently emerging active region 1176, which appears to be the remains of AR1165. It's very active with some small but bright proms and and a nice filament.

Viewed through my 60mm modded PST with a 10mm Plossl (70x)

Roel,

Beautifully rendered H alpha sketch. Please tell us how you achieved the appearance. This AR is definitely going to be one to watch. I see it didn't take long for you to get hooked on Ha.

Roel,

You could sell PST scopes with these wonderful sketches.
Astounding!

Frank

Roel,

Another outstanding observation of the solar surface and prominences using your PST. You have captured the prominences along the solar limb very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Roel.

Your sun`s sketches are very well done. I like them very much. As I`m a newbie in sketching, do you have a list of equipment required and some basic technics to start ??? Do you use a basic sun surface model you modify according to your observation or you do it from scratch every time ???

Andre.

Roel

Another beautiful sketch-work by you!

Sorry I have been away for some time here and missed many of your posts and by others here too.

Your photorealism and technical accuracy is invaluable. Have you ever considered sending your sketch work to NASA's Spaceweather.com ? I'm sure that the NASA physicist Dr. Tony Phillips would enjoy posting your work for the world to see. [Hint:] It is usually that he posts it as a timely and related image within a days time of the actual observation. Thousands of people around the world view photos there daily but it is rare to see fine art there so it is quite welcomed as a refreshing image to so much over-saturation of photography on the web these days. He will occasionally write up a small text to explain something like- “Yes, this is what the sun looks like through an h-alpha filtered telescope with photography but this really is a hand sketched artwork by Roel from his direct observation through his solar telescope!”

I look forward to seeing your next sketch-work and observation reports. You've inspired me to get out my 40mm Coronado and take a look at the sun again after so long on my solar minimum break...

best wishes,

Mark

Fantastic. Did you colorize it in photo editing software after you sketched it? If not, what media did you use to achieve at color? One of the reasons I rarely sketch the Sun in color is because it never looks as dynamic as what the Sun actually is. But you've captured it very well.
