Coma Star Cluster and Big Dipper at 1.6x
      #4603481 - 05/26/11 01:10 AM Attachment (40 downloads)

A few days ago I took apart a cheap 20mm eyepiece and stuck the lens in a cheap finder bracket. In no time I ended up with an 8mm F/5 refractor, and tonight was its first light.

The telescope can be used up to around 6x power, and can just show M13 under my light-polluted sky. Where it really shines, however, is in widefield views. At 1.6 power it shows more stars than the naked eye, and has a ~27 degree field of view.

I started by observing the Coma Star cluster. I was surprised that stars actually came to sharp focus as the fuzzy blob of the naked eye cluster became a wedge of stars shimmering in their background glow through the telescope. Please excuse some poor star placements, I was holding the scope in one hand while sketching with the other.

The field of view is large enough to fit the entire Big Dipper, and that's with only a 50 degree Apparent FOV.

TE,

Very nice sketches. Always fun to see what you can pick out using very small aperture that is larger than your dialated pupil.
