I was out yesterday night with the C8, despite a severe cold, but because the arms of the galaxy had disappeared into our twilight night, I couldn't pinpoint the location of the SN. I checked the entire face of M51 for stars, and at some times did glimpse a few. After getting inside and comparing with images, I am quite sure I did actually see the SN, if ever so faintly, but I won't log it, as I am not 100% sure.
The bad thing is, the sky is getting brighter for another three weeks, the Moon is up soon as well. Yesterday may have been the only chance I ever got to see this supernova...

With certainty spotted the SN last evening around 2340. Visible but only through averted vision - blinked in and out. Observed through Orion 10" Dob w/ 32mm EP and C-8 w/ Baader Hyperion 20mm. Myself and 2 others observing last evening saw it through these instruments. In my C-8, it appeared nearly midpoint from the core and bright star at the 5 o'clock position. Magnitude reported online (can't remember source) as ~13.5 mag.

It's actually currently marked as magnitude 14.2 at this website:

I think 14.2 might've been just a tad-bit beyond what seeing ..... Clear Skies, Brandon Doyle
In the picture I posted above you can clearly see that the SN is dimmer than the bright star to it's left. According to the USNO-A star catalog that star is 14th mag. I measured the magnitude of the SN as 15.0 (both broad band and blue) in my image (taken June 4, 2011 at 4:40 UT).
It would seem that this SN is fading fast.

Hi,
around 03:02 (GMT+1), 25th May, I saw a flashing star around the area of M51. It was like a bright star shining up and fading, and it lasted no more then one second. The event was in my averted vision area.
I am wondering if there is a camera somewhere that recorded the event.

I tried it visually tonight but failed to glimpse it in a 6" under 5.5 skies with 7/10 seeing. If it is 13.5, it might have been doable. I did glimpse the prominent star superimposed near the core and detected spiral structure.
It's actually currently marked as magnitude 14.2 at this website:

I think 14.2 might've been just a tad-bit beyond what seeing might've allowed you to see. However, don't give up!
Clear Skies, Brandon Doyle
And don't spare the magnification when trying. On Saturday night, myself and a couple of other club members were doing somepoutreach at a Girl Guide camp. I had my little 6 inch dob with me. I've seen the SN easily with my 12.5" so wanted to give it a shot with my little one. The SQM reading was 21.33 and I'd say the seeing was a solid 7/10 as gamma Virginis was an easy split at 240X. At 240X the SN was suspected maybe 50% of the time with averted vision but at 300X (4mm UWAN) two of us were able to maintain a steady view 100% of the time with averted vision. The third member of our group couldn't make it out mostly because he hadn't seen this SN before so didn't know where to look.

I saw the supernova quite easily last night in my 10" under mag 5.5 skies. It was the second most prominent star on the disk, just slightly fainter than the mag 13.4 star that lies near it just off the disk. It looked to me like the supernova was actually brighter than it was when we spotted it at Kopernik.

I was out observing deep sky objects under EXCELLENT conditions on June 1st, but I only paid fleeting attention to M51, looking for difficult, faint fuzzies, so I lost my chance that night to actually observe a brand new supernova! I read about it here the very next day, but night shifts did not allow me to observe until Saturday, June 4th, by which time the transparency of my normally very clear skies had detoriated significantly.
Whereas I can normally detect right away the grand spirals of M51 with my 12" dob even from my suburban location, on Saturday night I could only see a broad faint halo around the nucleus of M51 barely brightening slightly where the brighest part of the spirals exist.
I had to experiment quite a bit with magnifications and had to concentrate very hard until I was able finally to see with my own eyes the light from this exploding star. The best set up proved to be my 13mm Ethos coupled with the TV "Big" 2X barlows, giving me 231X. At this magnification the galaxy halo was barely visible, but I could hold the supernova steady enough for me to prepare a drawing!
I tried again last night under similar conditions (but with slightly steadier seeing, and I have an impression that the supernova was slightly brighter or at least slightly easier... But as I said, it might only be an impression...

Thank you for sharing the sketch. I distinctly saw the two stars close to M51 that you show without difficulty. As for the SN, I am unsure whether I saw it. I may have caught fleeting glances of it with averted vision in the same area you identified using my new 14mm ES lens and 2x barlow for 171x. It was truly at the very limits of "did i see it" or "is that just my imagination". So, it is an unconfirmed sighting for now. In hindsight, I should have grabbed by 10mm lens and barlowed that and I would have had a better chance at a confirmed sighting. I was just enjoying the new EP too much to think about switching.

We saw the SN on Sat, June 4th from steady, dark skies at the Palomar- Explore the Stars event. The 25" Dob showed it easily in the outer arm structure. We also imaged it with an 8" and 30 second exposure. I'm almost certain that i also got a view of it through my 8" Dob. Twas a spectacular evening!

I saw it last night through my 10" reflector and 200X. M51 and NGC 5195 just filled the FOV, and I sketched all of the detail that was visible in the eyepiece. I'll be sure to post it in the Sketching forum if anyone wants to see it.

I looked for the SN in M51 this past Saturday night at my astronomy clubs dark sky site. Seeing was average to below average and we have to deal with lots of aerosols due to wildfires here in SE Arizona. I was not able to see the SN in my C11, but could catch glimpses of it during moments of good seeing in a 15" Dob. I would estimate the mag of the SN at 15.5 visual since I could easily see stars of 13.5 & 14 mag in the same field of view. The posted pics make the SN look much brighter than it is visually.
I was able to see the SN in NGC 3972 in Ursa Major. This SN is much easier to see visually. I estimate this SN at 14 mag when compared to two 13.5 mag in the same field of view.
Two SN in one night. How cool is that!

I cannot, repeat CANNOT believe I forgot about the SN last night. What is wrong with me? Oh well, transparency kind of, well, sucked last night. I'd probably have missed it in my 8inch anyway. And yes, this is a "Sour Grapes" rationalization!
Clear Skies, Matt PS. will have to check the skies at sunset and see if I should break out the scope.

Got it in my 22" F/4 last night. 13mm Ethos EP. It was easily visible under direct vision. Very cool to see this stuff with your naked eye (telescope aided of course).

I just spotted it without difficulty in my 6" refractor at 200X, despite the moonlight. I even managed to glimpse it with my binoviewer in place, though that made it considerably more difficult.
