Several Nights with the Baader Bino Viewer
      #4687261 - 07/11/11 04:22 PM

I've had the Baader Max Bright for over a month and on every clear night I tried to use them if I wasn't imaging and I have to say that so far they work very well. I have an observing buddy that uses Denk Standards and even he was impressed. Going back and forth between objects with a comparable corrector 2x to the Baader 2.6X the view was indistinguishable.

The Pros are:

1) Nice build quality (on the second pair)
2) Very little warm color with used without the prism.
3) Nice selection of accessories
4) Great 3-D like view on the moon and sun.
5) Ability to use high power (on the EON used the 12MM with 2.6X corrector for around 200 power with no loss of detail)
6) Works in all my scopes.
7) Holds collimation in what ever angle I have the binos.

Cons:
1) Baaders dim the view (more noticable on the 120), on the 9.25 barely noticable
2) The Prism imparts a warm color to everything.
3) Ghosting on close by bright objects (like the moon)
4) Cost with accessories add up.
5) Quality control on first unit was bad.

Overall a very good value and would be recommended. Considering my first one was defective I would make sure whoever you buy from has a good return policy (alpine astro is excellent, in case you are wondering)

Hi,

Nice review! Just a question. I saw an earlier topic of you where you tested the Baader Maxbright on arrival. You didnt need a corrector and didnt even need a barlow to get it in focus. I have an Equinox 120ED, this scope is similar to the EON. But I need a 2x barlow AND a 1.7x corrector. How is it possible that I need both and you dont need even non of these to get everything in focus. How is this possible? Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have the Baader Prism, I can't reach focus with the standard 2" Diaganol. Get the Baader Prism and you should be able to reach focus. Please note that only the 18 and 12mm reach focus without a corrector, the 25 needs the corrector. I also noticed some color, so a corrector does more than extend the light path, it changes it for aberrations also.

Thanks for your advice.
What prism from Baader you've got? I see several types, wich one do I need?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered t2-01c the maxbright 32 mm prism star diagonal. I also got the 2" nose piece to mount to the 2" focuser.

Oke thanks. But its a 1 1/4 eyepeace clamp, the baader maxbright bino is 2", how did you fit that?

The diagonal doesn't come with a nose piece so you need it to connect to binoviewer to the refractor. I can post pictures later today.

Its just to complete the prism diagonal - unlike most diagonals the Baader is sold as "body only", it does not come with a nosepiece for inserting into a diagonal or visual back. So you have a choice of adding a 1.25" or 2" nosepiece, long or short - or even attaching the diagonal directly to the scope with an adapter and no nosepiece.

T2-06 changer - the binoviewer has a dovetail that attaches directly to the body of the prism diagonal without using an eyepiece clamp. Another reason why the Baader requires less backfocus.

See how the 2" adapter fits on the Prism. I just mount the prism to the binoviewer and I have a lot of focus. I actually ordered the 1.7X corrector, so if it works with the Lunt, I may no longer have a need for the 2.6X corrector.

Just one question legt. Will be 9mm eyepieces also get infocus with this setup? Or is just the 12mm the bottomlimit?

Rudios,

I can't answer on the 9MM, and it really depends on the eyepiece, the 12 and 18 are right at the edge of focus. I tried a Meade 8.8 UWA and was unable to get that ep to focus without a corrector.

Okay! I mean a pair of these ( http://www.birdbino.com/main/product.asp/catalog_name/Astronomics/category_name/4SXTTARRLMWX8H3UA5Q5HNAN82/product_id/TMBP09) eyepeaces. I guess I have to find out then. I have a 1.7 Baader corrector also, but I wanna have a magnification round 100x.

Rudios I just realized my remarks on the correct dovetail adapter, etc. were for the Baader Mark V. It looks like the Maxbrights might have a slightly different connection, although both use the T-2 system. Anyway hfjacinto has it well covered. Good luck!

Johnny,

The Mark V and Baader MaxBright use the same T2 system, so anything you use on the Mark 5 will work with the MaxBright.

@jfjacinto. What magnifications you have with your current eyepeaces?

Would the T2-01B prism also work ?...says its 34mm clear aperture, not sure if thats the only reason its twice the price though ?
