Audubon question
      #47383 - 01/29/04 07:12 PM

I bid on an online bidding service (won't mention any names....) and won a brand new pair of Swift Audubon 804 ED binoculars. These are the older model (exta low dispersion model) that Swift updated with the 820 model. I plan on using them for about 70 % terrestrial and 30% astronomical use. I got them for $ 222.50 I have read fantastic reviews of these bino's for birding uses, and was wondering how well they will serve me for astronomy use...leave any feedback.....thanks By the way I saw these binoculars (804ed model) going recently for $ 369.95 on one of the more common online photo supply companies, so I guess I did well.

I discussed these briefly on the bino thread "Pentax 10x50 DCF SP" currently on page 4 of this forum.

David, I received my Audubon's today in the mail. Overall I am impressed with the build/optical quality of these bino's. I compared the views to some Russian (Sovietski) bino's I had that I thought were pretty good; but the Swift's blow them away. You are very correct however about the image degradation as you travel out from the center of the objective. The centers are fantastically sharp but get out about 50 % or so and things get fuzzy pretty quick. I haven't tried them at night and only did a little observation with them due to time. Anyway thanks for the info.

An exceptional value for the price paid. Well done.
