Orion Binoviewer with or without compression rings
      #4775457 - 08/29/11 10:30 AM

Hi guys,

This is my first attempt at binoviewing. I am looking forward to the experience so I have ordered a new pair of Orion Binoviewers a few weeks ago while they were on sale.

Unfortunately the Binos are still held up at Orion's because of some missing items (filters & filter wheel).

Now, someone told me over the week-end that these Binos don't have compression rings. Is that true ?

I don't want to use anything that doesn't have a compression ring with any of my eyepieces. I think most modern equipments come with rings and IMO they should all come with rings but surprisingly there are still some that don't.

The description of the product on Orion web site does not make mention of any. I saw a picture that seems to show the rings but I am not positive...

I also phone Orion but never had a firm and positive answer either. You know the 15 second type: ''Ah, let's see sir, the compressor rings ... Ah yes. Hmmm... They are there''...

So if any of you can give me their opinion on the value of these binoviewers and confirm the presence of the compression rings I would appreciate it.

Thanks...

The Orion binoviewers I have use 3 nylon screws. I'm not sure what your concern about the compression ring is, but the fit of the eyepiece holders is very close so there's no issue with centering and the nylon screws don't scar my eyepieces.

Long time lurker but I had to help out a fellow CN'er. I got a set a few months back but have yet to have first light with them. Just trucked down the basement and my set has a single set screw with compression rings, the rings are black - so they don't show up in photos well but they are there. I keep my set in a Plano XL pistol case from Walmart with three sets of various sized Plossl EPs - nice fit for everything.

Looks like there may be some variation. My Orion binoviewer also has 3 nylon set screws. They don't scratch my eyepieces, but they strip out very easily.

I got a new Orion binoviewer about two weeks ago and it has compression rings BUT one of them was missing somehow. They are sending a replacement. Hope yours had the compression rings too.
