Light pollution and the public. new
      #4760706 - 08/21/11 02:56 PM

I was at a local festival today where our astronomy society had a stand set up. Lots of members of public stopped by our stand, even if they weren't interested, out of sheer curiousity and a good 90% of them mentioned light pollution. We had a couple hundred people visit us.

I was very careful to emphasise that we don't want lights put out, just the end of misdirected and poorly shielded lights and, to a man, woman and child, they agreed. These were people from all walks of life and backgrounds and, I know it's a small sample, but they all seemed to wish that the orange and white glow over cities would vanish. Even the ones who confessed to no particular interest in astronomy disliked the skyglow, purely because it's hideous.

I didn't bring the subject up - if I did it was about once - they did. If that isn't encouraging, then I don't know what is. It's certainly a step in the right direction, and a sign that the message about light pollution is getting across here in the UK.

That's great to hear Faith. Now we just need to start encouraging people to take action on their own - aim lights down, shield them downwards, or turn them off when not needed. We'll get there, but public awareness is the first step. Nice news to hear!

Thanks for getting the word out. I have always wondered why people who are concerned about atmospheric pollution and the environment aren't also concerned about light pollution and the loss of dark skies.

Very good to hear. I wish these people were writing to their local councils.
