There's a quick release button on the counterweights that allow you to slide them up and down the shafts quickly. The threading allows for small adjustments with one hand.

Now I understand! Very cool. I like it.

Also one spends so little time balancing that the extended setup and teardown don't seem worth any ease and precision gained in an already simple task.

I agree with you. I actually made a suggestion to a Meade rep to provide a standard CW shaft as an option. I told him about the MI250 that used to come with a threaded CW and the users did not like it.

You know that "Murphy" is salivating at this one...Having to hold in a button while trying to move a heavy weight does not sound too user friendly at least for this fumble fingered user ...and what happens when the button gets stuck? ...John

They added the button because their demo model kept having the weights bind against each other and they couldn't get them to unscrew apart. Meaning if you have one weight already on it and you screw the second weight until it makes contact with the first, it would create some sort of friction binding thing which I am sure someone else could define better than I. The Meade reps couldn't get them apart using their hands and mentioned it happening before.

You are quite right. A Meade rep gave me a demo and it did not look good at all. He struggled to move the CW.

After surgically dissecting counterweights , let's talk about the weight of LX800 OTAs. Following is a good link for reference where some folks are actually weighting their barebones Meade OTAs (older ones I mean, without forks...LX200).

I am interested in talking about the weights of barebones NEW LX800 OTAs, especially 14”? I think LX200 weights would be a good reference for LX800, given Meade has yet to publish all LX800 OTA weights.

Here is the Link

Oh no. We are not done yet. I was told that the quick release button will only be available if you purchase the whole package (both mount and telescope). A single CW does not have a release button. Only a double CW has a 'quick' release button. So much to know about CWs

They just posted some photos of the 800 from a photoshoot, and included a 360 view of it for those of us who haven't managed to get to a trade show recently. They also have a pic of the new f5 reducer/flattner

The 360 thing is darned cool. Closest I'll ever get to actually seeing one of those mounts I reckon.

I hope Meade delivers...big time.

I got in touch with one of the beta testers of the LX800...this is the respond I got for what its worth

"Hi John.
I have been having fun with the new LX800. I have it located in my observatory and I polar aligned it.
I have a Canon 40D DSLR camera attached at f8. It hits the targets and starts guiding. I usually manually centre the objects to suite my field of view. The OTA has manual focus.
The mount if very stable and auto guides as well as more expensive mounts. I have not checked the PEC error as it auto guides.
It is MEADE’S best product I have ever tested.
Jack"

After looking at the 360 images on Facebook, one thing that bothers my designer's eye is that there are four different blue finishes on the setup--the OTA, the finder scope, the guide scope and the blue trim on the mount. Industrial design matters, just ask Apple.

OTA color looks oddest of all; color of other three (finder scope, guide scope, mount) not so much.

Another thing I have been wondering is that telescope photos so far (beta tester scope, 360° view, new pic, etc.) have been of a 10" LX800. 12" and 14" LX800 seem to me missing in action. Not sure what's up with the larger aperture scopes; are they even being tested; would they be ready for release at the same time or would there be a staggered release…if and when it happens?

Well...not really. Priced Jetskis (or regular skis) lately? How about a bass boat...or...

250 does seem a bit high for an inert (or nearly so) weight, though, I'll admit.

Yeah, but it's stainless steel rather than some poorly painted piece of cast iron. Stainless costs $$!
