Was wondering how you folks foresee mounting a 130mm APO on an LX80 mount? Wouldn't LX80 be able to handle a standard astrophotography load alongside a 130mm APO?

Here is a hypothetical setup:

1. 130mm APO=25 lbs.
2. An additional counter weight=11 lbs.
3. A compact guide camera (e.g., ST-i) =~0.5 lbs.
4. A Cannon DSLR camera=~2 lbs.

Total add-on weight=~38.5 lbs.

If the optics are good and the focuser works as advertised, the OTAs are going to sell well for their imaging potential. Add in the prupose built f5 reducer and you have a very versatile instrument.

With mounts shipping, this thread is easily headed to the 30+ page range... I suggest a new thread be started,
something like "My LX800 is here ..." ...

Sounds like a good idea to start a new thread; how about "Meade LX800 Evaluation" for the title?

Anyone here have an actual tracking number?? I don't see any guys with pre-orders chiming in here.

If they did start shipping out last week there should be plenty in people's hands by end of the week!

My pre-order is for the 14" version which I would expect wouldn't start shipping until next year.

Meade just posted a new photo on their Facebook page indicating that the 12" models have shipped...

I saw the blueish 10" f/8 ACF tube on the ground in his house and asked if he had tested that too,, he then looked me in the eye and said "the optics on that 10" are outstanding, if they (Meade) releases all the f/8's like the one they sent me for testing, then they will have a very good ota on their hands".

I would really, really like to see a sample star-field image taken by a full-frame dSLR through that OTA with and without the f/5 reducer.

So strange that they are shipping the 12" first. They have had the 10" done for a while. The 10" is the one they used as the demo at all the events.

Do they direct ship to the customer or do they go to the dealer first? My understanding is they go to the dealer first. I have the 14 on order at woodland hills and I asked them to hold it for me and open the box, do a full set up and test it before I come pick it up. In fact Jon has my permission to take it home and try it out first

Did you purchase directly from Meade?

Maybe it's just me overthinking this...

But what would the possible *advantage* be of having to thread on your Counterweights? Seems a LOT of hassle to me... not to mention the possibility of them *migrating* over time w/o you knowing it...

What is wrong with tried/true locking clutches on a smooth CW shaft?

I think I would like the threaded counter shaft for two reasons.

1. Balancing should be easier and more accurate especially with the higher loads.

2. Safety. I've read several stories of the weights slipping off the shaft and smashing toes. Granted the safety nut wasn't on but even so if the weight slipped during an unattended imaging run you wouldn't know.

I have the 14" on order from Meade since January. Still no shipment.
Im curious to know when the 12" pre-orders were placed that have shipped.
Anyone know?

I think it is more about ‘what's ready’, ‘what’s been tested’, etc. (apparently 12" in this case), vs. the time to pre-orders.
