The next best thing with this type of design is probably an Ioptron Mini Tower Pro. Comparing the specs I am still going to keep waiting for the LX80. I am sure it will show up soon since I just consulted my magic 8 ball which said "Outlook Good" and you can't get much more reliable than a magic 8 ball.

I don't know about you, but I like my steak well-done.
I also like my mounts well done, I think people are jumping the gun, let Meade finish their mount BEFORE they send it out. I have good expectations for the LX80, by the way, does anyone have any information as to what kind of metal/plastics are used? And some details on the barrings?

Do you also like for your waiter to take your order, repeatedly tell you that it's "almost done" and still not have your food 4 hours later?

You're going to hate yourself when they announce it's shipping next week.

I'm pretty sure you won't end up hating yourself, regardless of how the mount turns out or when it ships. Shipping at Hayneedle told me that orders from October and November will be shipping out around now but a lot of buyers on the waiting list will be getting theirs in May or later. It sounds like Meade sold a ton of these things.

As for the next best thing, it depends on what you're using it for. If you're looking for a cheap astrophotography mount to start out on, CG-5 GTs are selling for around $450 on astromart and cn pretty much weekly. They're dressed up in cheap plastic parts and they're LOUD, but the GoTo is spot on and several people on cn have posted shots taken with 10 minute subs on a CG-5 without any hyper tuning (full disclosure - I own one and have yet to break the six minute barrier but I'll get there).

Good Alt/Az mounts...I can't personally vouch for the cube or the mini-tower but IOptron mounts get great reviews and they're pretty reasonably priced also.

Oh yeah, CGEMs and CGEM DX are on sale now too. $1199 for a new CGEM!

It is really unfortunate that we can not have an official ship date from anyone. Meade reps are telling vendors different things depending on who they talk to. Vendors pass along that info and each vendor has different information. I hope this is closer to the truth. I ordered mine at OPT on November 19th and I ordered my LX800 with 14" ota back in September at PATS. FWIW, my source at OPT said something similiar. End of this month will see delivery of mounts for early orders.

And Synta EQ6. And soon (maybe?) iOptron iEQ30.
And Vixen GP2 SBS if the load is light enough, or (under $2K usually) Vixen SX-W.
Alt-azimuth: iOptron MiniTower II, iOptron MiniTower Pro.

The iOptron iEQ45 is 20 lbs (!) lighter than the CGEM.

If your scope literally weighs 30 lbs, and you are looking to do astrophotography with it, you shouldn't be looking, IMO, at mounts in this price class.
You should be looking at mounts in the Losmandy G-11 class.
All of these mounts will have some serious periodic error to tame if the load is 30 lbs total. But if that 30 lbs doesn't include camera and guiding gear, then you should seriously look into the next class of mount up from them.

I was looking at the Vixen GPD2 that is currently 999.00 on sale. Add the extras you'll need and it puts it at about $1300.00 How does the Vixen hold up vs. the CGEM or other similarly priced mounts?

The GPD2 is a lighter-duty mount--great with a 4" refractor or up to 8" SCT or 6" Mak.
It's so expensive if a computer is added, Vixen recommends the Sphinx SX-W instead because it's heavier duty and cheaper!(the SX-W is std with a computer)

Unfortunately, for some mounts like the Atlas are simply unaffordable. The Atlas is also (for me) a very heavy mount. If I ever build that dream observatory in my back yard I'd take a hard look at making such an investment and the weight won't matter. Until then I luv my LXD75s and I'm curious about the LX80.

Similar price range, but a big difference in weight. The LX80 is supposed to be 66 lbs. That's encouraging, because it might be more stable than similar inexpensive mounts.
