One thing you didn't mention is long term parts availability. I sure don't want to invest this kind of money even if the mount is good nd find out Meade has quit making parts 3 years later. I really can't see a way for them to reassure customers that this won't be a problem in the future. They don't sell parts for the stuff they currently sell.

I think Meade's marketing department has done a really good job of sending just enough teasers out there to get discussions like this going until they have a bunch of us slobbering all over the place waiting for the release! I'd like to know who the Beta testers are for these mounts!

Let's just hope that you don't have to be one of the first 500 purchasers of this mount in order to qualify as a "beta tester."

You mean, like the G11 with Gemini 2?

I think Meade's has a usually fairly good track record in this regard. They supported the Classic LX200 for a long time after it went out of production. But, yeah, in this price range that is a consideration. Normally I'd say "Well it's a new product...gonna be around for a long time," but then there is the example of the pore old RCX 400...

One thing about the LX80 is it has a Rs232 port so it should be able to interface with Skysafari on an IPhone/IPad unlike the Mini tower Pro which can not. Rex

Well...I bought a new Atlas mount in November, sooo....I guess I'm not waiting! There were/are too many unknowns about the mount and I didn't really want to wait. Life's too short!
Love the Atlas, btw. I was out polar aligning it the other day using the drift alignment technique, and boy is that thing sweet. There's hardly any backlash at all and it's sure smooth. There's no comparison to my old CG5's in that regard.
Good luck with the LX80's! Maybe I'll be kicking myself someday (but I doubt it).

The usual crummy late fall to early spring weather is making the wait tolerable....and ice out around here is three months away.
So I'll wait for the NEW !! Meade LX 80 Mount until April 15th. After that they can drop dead.
Patrick, enjoy your new Atlas!

I also came across a CG-5gt while I was waiting for the LX80. I was able to trade away my 10" LX200 classic fork mount for it straight up. I'm getting perfect 45 second subs unguided and I haven't even tried any of the balancing tricks yet. I may still think about getting the LX80 at some point if it gets good reviews.

I'm with Patrick on this one. I picked up an Atlas on closeout from the Orion site(for the same price as the LX 80) and couldn't be happier. I do hope the LX 80 is a success, but I'm not going to bet on it.

Too early to speculate about the success or failure of a product. It could be a great product and fail or it could be a bum product that would sell in huge quantities due to slick marketing.
Any new product starts off with a bumpy ride. That's why they tell you never to buy the first manufacturing run of any new car. In my opinion the success or failure of the product will depend on how well the company handles this initial buggy batch. If they work with the user and provide good support, people wont mind.
As an example, as much as people have complained about the Gemini G2, it is still selling and most customers are generally happy with it. That's because the guy writing the software is in direct contact with users and even takes requests for features (I got my requests put in as features).

I have been looking at all the alt-az mounts I can find , Televue Gibraltar 5, Disc-Mount 6, T-Rex, Half-Hitch etc. and all I can say is that these mounts cost between $2,000 and $4,000. If the LX80 can do what Meade claims (and after 30 years of building alt-az mounts from ETX to LX it should be able to) I will wait for their $800 mount and take a chance on it. Rex
