I finally got all my equipment together (Cannon EOS Digital Rebel 350D) with my NexStar 9.25GPS and managed to get it out one night with bad seeing for the moon. I had lots of problems getting Orion's adapters to work, as they ended up being the wrong T-ring size for their adapter, so I had to get one from another outfit. I took a few shots one night when the moon was low in the south but the wind and seeing kept things from being all that satisfactory. I managed to salvage only one image before I was satisfied that my setup would actually work, and I have never gotten back to imaging. This is what I came up with:

Very nice image of the moon, David!

So are you now crossing over to the AP dark side? Many of us here have done it or are planning to do it (as in my case). I always thought of you being one of those stalwart visual guys. I'm beginning to think this AP harpy sings a siren song that many of us are having trouble shrugging off. (Is that a mixed metaphor?)

Anyway, nice moon shot!

Hi Tom,

Well I've been dabbling in afocal - some of it fair, most of it horrible.

It is my dear SWMBO and it isn't money that is the issue. She has made a deal with me that she will support my moving over to the dark side if I will lose weight. She has not stated how much weight will satisfy her. Bless her, she is really looking out for my health and I appreciate that. I think she wants to be sure I will live long enough to use all that expensive equipment! So, I agreed with the deal and I will abide by it. So far, I've lost a few pounds here and there. Unfortunately, I sometimes find them again and have to start over. And losing weight ain't easy at my age!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

Hey Skip, your good lady wife knows best, after all, what use is anything without the good health to enjoy it,so i totally agree with her!

Then again, astrophotography need not be that expensive, certainly solar system can be quite inexpensive, lunar, solar and planetary can all be captured with a decent web cam such as the Philips SPC900, or its clone, those are quite cheap these days, although the SPC900 has been discontinued, its clone is still out there, and they produce some excellent results!

regards,

Tom.

What can i say Peter, the very thought of going toe to toe and fisty cuffs with Yvonne, is enough to make me conceed, which begs the question, why are there no "throw in the towel" Graemlins in the options,

regards,

Tom.

Hey Art,

I have not seen any of those in the Graemlin list???? I especially like the one 'hiding behind the sofa'!

Rickster, we gotta have more graemlins so we can better express ourselves!

Well, I did a lot of film lunar photography (and darkroom work for it), and didn't get much better than what I posted here. It is a lot easier with the digital camera than with my film efforts, but it also presents a lot of frustration at times. There are so many other people doing far better work than I ever could that it makes sense for me to just to stick with visual work. That image, interestingly enough, was a single 1/500th of a second exposure at ISO1600, as I was trying to freeze the horrid seeing. That short of an exposure really shows up the noise in the camera, which would not have been present if I had taken a few shots and done some stacking under somewhat better seeing using a considerably longer exposure at a much lower ISO rating. Oh well, it was basically a "test of concept" for me, so I guess it proved what I was doing would work. I did have one shot from 2005 in an older Sony digital camera of Mars in my NexStar 9.25, but it isn't much to talk about (see below). Clear skies to you.

That's a marvellous Mars. Maybe a slight colour shift towards brown by reducing the orange would perhaps may it look even more awesome.

Yes Art, those would do nicely ,LOL.

David, dont put your imaging down, that`s a very nice shot of Mars,Polar cap shows nicely as do the surface features you captured, very well done i would say, you seem to have a natural flare for AP

regards,

Tom.

Nice image David.
From the comments I see from the A.P lads, Mars is not an easy target at the moment. You've made a good job of it.

Thanks for posting.

Actually, that isn't the polar cap that is shown in that image. It is one of the faint bluish clouds that often is present over the northern regions of the planet near the limb. The northern polar cap was not visible at that apparition, as that portion of the planet was tilted away from us. It was a fair shot considering it was about the first time I had ever tried to do that, but compared to what Damian Peach does, it isn't much to talk about. Clear skies to you.

Took this with C6 on CG-5, 30 x 30 secs, 12 x 30 darks, processed in PSE 9 and NCT and applied artificial flats. Omega Cen, was cloudy but I had to do something Saturday night.
