I didn't get a full shot of the sun with the Neximage cam during the transit, but what I thought was amazing was that everyone who came up to the roof to check out the transit through the scope ended up taking a shot with their iPhone/cell phone camera through the EP. I was amazed at how good some of these shots came out. Part of me wishes I had more imaging time, but it was way more fun showing off the scope and watching people drop their jaw in amazement as they looked at the sun and the transit. Here's one from an iPhone 4.

Tim and Dan, great shots. Tim, is there another filter to use to get the "natural" color of the sun? I too have iPhone pics, but the Baader solor filter is the Neutral white color.

Thanks

Took some time with Registax 6 and GIMP and fixed up my previous shot of the transit with this.

That's a great shot Dan.

@Matt, yes, the Baader film produces a boring "white" colour. I artificially "colourise" the image using Photoshop - cheating I know - but I prefer the yellow/orange colour.

Cracking shots all guy`s, Dan i like your image as Venus really contrasts with the sunpots on the solar disc, very nice indeed.

Tim, love the image above, looks like you got a better handle on Reg 6, cool shot and nicely processed!

Matt, totally agree with Art, and its quite a simple thing to colourize your image, nice capture of Venus and some nice sunspot detail too!

best regards,

Tom.

Ahhhh, "cheating", why didn't I think of that. Haha. I got a new computer recently so lost photoshop.

Just throwing it out there, but if anyone has free time and would like to try to colorize that image, I would be most appreciative.

The I could show the kids as well.

Ok Matt, i`ll bite,

Just a quick attempt, although the very bright centre in the solar disc does not help matters but i still gave it a go, not sure the colour is to everyones taste and others may do better.

or perhaps a little more yellow

regards,

Tom.

THANKS Tom!! They are both great. I saved the second one back on my iphone, rotated 90 deg ccw, and auto enhanced it using the settings. Very natural color with black drop of Venus and sunspots.

The kids (and I) love it.

Hello there NexStar imagers. I'm about to pull the trigger on a laptop to get me started imaging. But I've got a question concerning the MS Windows 7. The computer I'm consdiering has W7 64 bit. Is the 64 bit OS gonna cause me any problems with the imaging software that we need to use? I'm initially thinking of Registax, AmCap, SharpCap, wxAstroCapture, and Craterlet. But eventually I'll probably want to start using DSS, Nebulosity, BackYardEOS, and/or perhaps others. I'll use my desktop for post processing with PS4.

I'm very dumb when it comes to software and I don't want to buy a laptop with an OS that starts me off in the hole.

Thanks,

Absolutely not! In fact, I have a 64 bit windows 7 and use almost all the software listed by you. I have a Dell Studio with ATI HD 4570 graphic series. Get one with a Graphic card and it will sing.

I had a great night last night, one of those rare nights when scope/imager/environment/operator all performed and worked beautifully together. Last night will be very memorable for me. The following images were taken with a stock NS8SE with older Mallincam color hyper imager. The MCH is limited to a 14 second exposure. All shots were in altaz mode obviously.

My pride and joy of the night: SN2012cg in Virgo. Inspired by Unk. Rod from his facebook post. Can't believe I bagged this one.

can't wait to get a precision mount and astro ccd cam.

thanks,
Andy

M13 is Breath-taking. SE mount, for the win!
What type of mount do you plan on getting?

I just got a used CG-5 ASGT mount for a hundred bucks. It was missing the altitude adjustment screws, safety screw, the dec motor housing was cracked and the power switch was fried. I soldered a jumper on the power board, and the other parts should be in on monday, so it should be like new. No issues with movement or balance that I can see, and I did a mock alignment and it worked just fine. Not bad for 100 plus 73 in parts.

I plan on getting an Orion Atlas EQ-G this tax season. Then I should really be happy, lol.

I will likely supplement the above eq mounts with the Orion autoguider package. Still cant decide on what I want to do for a camera. Thinking DSI 3 or similar. I am on a pretty strict budget.

thanks
Andy
