Thanks Dan. I didn't check the histogram peak. Yes, I took around 23 flats and stacked them with DSS. I will check your suggestion out later.

George, that is one of the most beautiful HH I have seen. Excellent capture.

In reply to your post, unfortunately my area is too light polluted and I can't go past 40 secs before the lights become washed out. Therefore I try not to put too much into my images unless I take some 200 lights and try to stack them and check the outcome, something I will try next time out.

Many congratulations on that lovely shot of the Horsehead Nebula, George ! I'm afraid as far as my observing site is concerned, it is now lost to me for another year or thereabouts !

Some excellent shots too, Haseeb. I take it though you obtained them using your AR102 which, if so, is giving you the blue halo-ing on the brightest of the field stars. (?). I just can't remember whether I'd asked you if you'd investigated the possible use of the Baader "Fringe Killer" or their slightly more sophisticated, "Semiapo" filter. I think you'd find either would help reduce this unwanted feature.(?)

Best regards,
Tel

That HH is one of the most beautiful images I have seen, pro stuff by George.

Indeed you mentioned it Tel and I had requested my friend from U.S. Unfortunately he had to undergo knee surgery so I need to wait for a few months. He is recovering though.

Downloaded Noel Carboni's actions with PSE 9. Had a go at M 13, however, if I want to add spikes to OTHER stars, how do I protect the core. I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Btw, in all this, the good folks have not given their verdict on my hard earned 'Ghost of Jupiter image'.

Thanks all for the feedback. I feel like my skill is improving but I still have much to learn. I am trying to maximize the equipment I have as it is me that is rate-limiting at this point!

Best,

George

Hi Haseeb,

Referring to your "Ghost of Jupiter" and your recent M13, I can't help thinking that you're picking the wrong targets or more accurately, using the wrong "size" camera / 'scope combination. Both of these objects would have been much more suited to your 6" SCT rather than, what I suspect you used, your AR102. (?)

I don't know if you're aware, but there is an excellent calculator produced by Rod Wodenski, (New Astronomy Calculator), to aid you in selecting an appropriate imaging FOV for many objects and hence the most apt size of 'scope, (or as near to it) to suit.

Here's the link.

I've been trying to concentrate my imaging efforts of late on Mars before it is lost to me from my site location, to the lighter evenings and in any real detail, as it grows ever smaller. Seeing, on the night it was captured, (24th. March), was quite reasonable but transparency, bad. The image is therefore not exactly the sharpest but the surface markings, depicting the Solis Lacus area, are reasonably plain to see.

'Scope: Nexstar 8i @ f/30 (X3 Barlow).
Webcam: Phillips SPC900NC. 3000 frames at 10fps.
Processed in Registax 6 (Thanks to excellent tips from Haytor- you may remember that I stated a few days ago that I couldn't get on with " R6"!), and P/Shop CS2.

Thank you for looking.

Best regards,
Tel

Hi Tel,

There you go! Very nice Mars! Visually, Saturday night, it was a featureless orange disk. So your image has helped me get it in my head for the next couple of years .

Gotcha! I have been thinking about this and you have confirmed my thoughts. Next time out those Globulars and GoJ is through the C6.

Excellent image once again of Mars Tel!

Hi Skip, Hi Art,

Very many thanks, guys, for you comments !

Skip, I was using a LPR filter in order to capture the image, (one which Haytor kindly gave me sometime ago), but which, up till then, I hadn't had the chance to try.

Well, I tried it visually last Friday and was absolutely amazed at the detail I could see on the Mars !

I would even go as far to say that it was the best I've ever seen it. Most times it appears to me only as a very bright yellow to orange disc; too bright to see any quality detail which, despite claims, cheap and cheerful colour filters do nothing to improve.

This filter though is different; and how ! A small problem though, is that it seems to be of a nondescript brand; the only aspect present being a wavelength transmission/absorption chart which I can duplicate should you so wish. If however Haytor, (Tom) is reading this, maybe he can supply some further details if you're intersted.

I know he bought it at the 2011 Astrofest in London while I was with him and probably from a company called Modern Astronomy, but that's it.

Best regards,
Tel

Thanks Haseeb. I hope the New Astronomy Calculator works for you. I use it all the time !

(BTW. Apologies for the spelling mistake in my above post to you. I have an annoying habit of wanting to make things "suite", instead of "suit" a purpose) !

Best regards,
Tel

Sorry Tel and Skip, but i can add nothing to the info on that L/P filter other than what you have already stated,as Tel mentioned, i picked up both the 1.25" and 2" version of these filters from the London astrofest a year or so ago, i kept the 1.25" for my own use and passed on the 2" to Tel, as i had not used it(seemed a shame to have it sitting in my astro case unused)

Theres nothing on the case or the filter to suggest what brand they are, but something in the back of my mind says Skywatcher, but i cannot be certain.

Just glad to see and hear that Tel has put it to good use.

regards,

Tom.

Hi Tel, (you too, Tom),

Looks like I'll have to get my paws on one of those. I think Alex Post uses one for imaging as well.

I hope Peter's clear skies extend to your locations too!

Hi Skip,

I would only add one comment to what Tom has said and that is to be careful with regard to what you might consider buying in this respect.

UHC filters etc. are, for example, (as far as I can determine from limited experience), not the route to take, in as much as this particular filter seemed to be especially tuned to Mars' dark features. I can't express this any more definitively from my standpoint. In so commenting however, I have yet to be able to confirm the same or similar performance regarding the far more subtle markings on Saturn.

To this end, I will therefore try to keep you posted, (remind me though from time to time, since ain't age is a wonderful thing ?) as to how it fairs in this respect.

Meantime though, if you would like a profile of the relevant absorption/transmission chart, I'm more than willing to pass the appropriate wavelength numbers on to you.

Best regards,
Tel

Whilst not as exciting as picking apart a brand new supernova amongst recent DSO images, here's tonights Saturn, looking lovely as ever.

Neximage cam, 700 or so frames, 2X barlow.
