Whatcha Think About These?
      #48199 - 01/31/04 10:46 PM

I was looking at my newest Astronomy Mag last night, and notice Focus Camera(I think) had Celestron 15X70's for $79.00. Is this a good prive for these? Should I go ahead and buy'em. I've got a pair of 12X50 Bushnells, you'd think these(the Celestrons that is) would be better. Please enlighten me, O good and gentle friends. WW

Yes it's a good deal. I think some people were getting the same size- although a different brand, for about $70 + shipping. I don't think that's much of a difference in price, and I'm not even sure if they're available anymore, but it's just information to help you decide.

If you are willing to wait until they are back in stock, Amazon has the Skymaster 15x70 for $67 and change.

One question though: Do the Celestrons, or the Skymasters, Larry, have fold down eyecups? I wear frickin' BIFOCALS!! Plus I have mild astigmatism. WW

The Oberwerk 15x70's do; I would expect the same from Celestron and Skymaster, but I'm not sure.

I too wear bifocals(tough to get old isn't it) The Skymaster is made by Celestron and according to their web site has 18mm eye relief. I've read that should be enough for eyeglass wearers.

Yes the Celestron site DOES publish 18mm as the eye -relief AND specifies BAK4 prisms.

PUBLISHED eye -relief is however ,as some of us have found , not always the same as ACTUAL.

I also note that the Celestron 15 x 70 Skymasters are described as being "multi-coated" as opposed to the Oberwerk 15 x 70s "fully -multi coated broadband"

Although precisely what lenses are coated with , how many times/ layers ,under what conditions ,and to what quality of glass they have been applied to remain a mysterious secret in almost all cases ,at least with "fully multi -coated" one can be pretty sure that every single glass surface has been coated more than once.

It seems to me that anything less , i.e "coated", "fully -coated" or "multi -coated" is hardly worth taking a chance with these days , when FMC binoculars can be obtained for such a modest price.

I am not suggesting for one moment that the Celestrons are not worth around 70 US dollars .

But for another 80 dollars , I would be certainly be giving serious consideration to the Oberwerks.

Regards --Kenny.
