Wall packs - Gone!
      #4820745 - 09/21/11 07:50 PM

I live close to a public school that had annoying wall packs up until a few weeks ago. It seemed like my horizon was a darker during the last full moon but I had no idea why until I drove past the school a few nights ago. I was so excited, I had to drive by a second time! The wall packs were gone and full cut off lights were in place. What a happy surprise!

Of course my family thinks I'm nuts for doing the little dance in the parking lot.

Now if only I can do something about that tree......

Sweet! Great news indeed!

I have recently been marveling at the full cut off fixtures that the state of Illinois has been putting up on our highways as of late. The current project that got my attention was a rest stop area about 5 miles from my house - as the area was repaved, new lights were put up too - replacing the "glare bombs" that used to be there. Most of the interstate lighting between me and Chicago is also full cut off. Of course, the city itself, and many towns in-between, aren't using such fixtures (yet). But there seems to be some folks who are 'getting it' and better lights are being installed. One town south of me has put in some very attractive full cut off fixtures, and driving on those roads is actually a pleasure, because there is virtually no glare for long sections.

We'll get there!!

Our local astronomy society does that. If a business has installed astronomy-friendly lighting, we send them a letter of thanks.

Yeah it's a good idea and it also makes the point that the public does take notice.

Just a few years ago a new high school was built near here. All the exterior lights are FCO and boy-oh-boy. what a difference from the glare bombs on the street.
There is no shortage of light in that parking lot either.
