FOV circles in Cartes Du Ciel new
      #45749 - 01/26/04 12:14 PM

First off Cartes Du Ciel appears to be an awesome piece of freeware which may prove beyond me at the moment. I have been using StarCalc because it is easy to figure out and use, but I am wanting to learn to star hop and CDC appears better for this.

Tried to set up eyepiece circles but it doesn't seem right - or maybe it is which explains why I can barely find anything in the sky. I have a 32mm plossl with a 44d APOV using the formula in the help file I come up with a FOV of 70 min (1200mm fl on the scope). I enter this figure in the chart and the resulting circle is extremely small!

If I have done this correctly then maybe what I need to do is have a circle that represents my finderscope. How do I figure that one? My finder is 8x50.

It can be calculated if you know the focal length of the eyepiece on the finder scope, usually around 25 mm. Most manufacturers don't supply this info... although Orion used to have it printed on theirs (an 8x50 was 5.2°). Neither my Orion 9x50 RACI or my 10x50 Intes finders have this info printed on them.

The easy way to get into the ballpark is to have a look at the moon with it, as the full Moon is ½° in diameter.

I don't use CdC, but it would seem that if you 'zoomed in' on a part of the sky, your eyepiece FOV circle would get larger.
