How the hell do you align a fork mount SCT on a wedge?

You'll just have to be patient until some are actually in the hands of users or Meade posts the mount's instruction manual on their site.

Simply. With the mount/scope in the home position, center Polaris in your eyepiece using the At/Az adjustments. Calibrate the mount. Enjoy visual observing or drift align for AP or use the PA routine. I have no polar scope on my mount and use it all the time. It's an accessory, not a requirement.

And for southern hemisphere observers with no Polaris? This is when I find the lxd75 polar scope with (very faint) Octans pattern to be extremely useful. Albeit we don't know what the LX80 will be like, but I'd like to have polar scope ability if possible on this mount. Fox

That box structure says to me - mount a finder with a custom reticle! You could even fish the polar scope out of a dead LXD75. I have to admit, I'd miss the polar scope.

from the add that sky and telescope sent me, i believe it said that it was based on lightswitch technology. i could be wrong so i will recheck my email. it may have been referring to the high dollar mount.

I would guess they have some sort of competitive All Star Polar Alignment routine. I'm very interested in this mount, can't wait for some reviews.

meade really has celestron topped this year
the lx 80 is really going to hurt celestron why
would you want to by a cgem or cgem dx for 1500-2000
dollers when you can buy a mount thats better for
900 dollers.

Whilst I agree with you in some ways, I would bet that Meade as a whole is still on shaky ground in terms of revenue and profits (compared to Celestron).

As to whether the LX80 is 'better' than the CGEM, we'll have to wait and see - it's certainly 'different', but I don't know about better. Moreover, I see the CGEM as a higher capacity mount than the LX80. I think the LX80 is more of a competitor to the Celestron CG5. Then there is Audiostar vs. Nextstar, and I still think the software and handset of Nextstar is better than the Meade 497 series.

There is a big gap between the LX80 and 800, and I would be most interested to see if Meade fill it, and with what. I agree that Meade are definitely putting the pressure on Celestron, and it's the CG5 that is looking very old hat now. I'm surprised that Celestron have let it go for so long - so bring on the mount wars - its all good for the consumer.

I would think a properly functioning CGEM would out perform a properly functioning LX80 for imaging. IMO, The LX80 is to a mount what a SCT is to telescopes. Good for many uses but not great.

id say the lx 80 will be about the same as
the cgem 40lbs but its 700$ cheaper thats
why i said it will be better and 3 years
newer so the software is going to be just
as good if not better and in alt-azimuth
mode it holds 70lbs how could it not be
better than the cgem.

You make way too many assumptions there. Just because the mount is newer does NOT mean the software will be newer or better. You need to check the config in alt-az for the weight. If that is the weight for 2 scopes, one on each end, that is totally different than a person using a single ended setup. And just referencing Alt-Az, AP users will most likely not be using it in that config. You can't compare weight capacity in that mode to a CGEM.

Don't try to stir a pot before you have real information and usage reports to put into it!
Brian

My dining room table holds 500 lbs. but i wouldn't use it to mount a telescope.

Apparently you haven't purchased a "newly released" Meade product. And this comes from a guy who used to own Meade stock and also pre-ordered one of these mounts. I'm just hoping it's worth the $799.00.

I think the good thing about this mount is, that manyy people love alt/azm go to for the confort and position for seeing stuff, and many people start with that, later on the want to grow up on imagening stuff, and this mount will give you the oportunity to do DSO AP (i mean not AP Match 1 tracking) when you are ready on EQ mode, then if you want only visual go back to alt/azm mode and enjoy the visual, i think this mount hit the right spot of people (the majority that have limited budget) to do great visuals and do some starting DSO AP.

I just hope the hardware and software are good and i think meade with this mount for the masses could hit it good and bring good competition to celestron.

The only thing that makes me wait to buy one is meade service record and some of the hardware that comes with lots of plastic, I hope this is not the case.

If this mount works has advertise surely i will sell my cg-5 and SE mount and buy and lx80, so one day i can do only visual on alt/azm and the next day do some little ap on EQ mode.

Thats sweet.
