Anyone interested in bringing their classic scopes to NEAF? There may be the possibility of putting on a presentation about collecting and using vintage telescopes. There wouldn't be room for a lot of scopes but it would be great to have a few there.
The dates are 28-29 April 2012
I can help spearhead this but need to see if there is interest.

Good idea, Preston. Too bad you can't get a 100 x 100 booth....... what a show it would be to display a hundred or more classic/antique scopes!!!! Russ

Thanks Eric and John!
For this thing to get some serious traction, we are going to need some big, "visual" classics to initally attract the crowds. I can bring the Model 160 Unitron but I'm also thinking of a large Cave, at least a 12" classic CAT and to have a 5" Clark or other old classic refractor would be simply amazing.
Then we could have some of the smaller eyeball catching classics in the front such as a Model 128 Unitron, a 1960s Questar (I can get the Questar from my club) and all other possibilities. Maybe a long tube 6" or 8" classic Newtonian - who knows?
If we could provide this magnificent backdrop, then a presentation could be given about collecting and restoring vintage and classic scopes.
Just my vision folks.... shoot it down, modify it or if you can bring some of the big visual scopes to NEAF - let me know!

You're right! It's just hard to get him to wander that far from his cave. Also transporting a large scope across the United States might be challenging for a Caveman to do!

Yes, I would absolutely love to display my Goto observatory scope at NEAF. Unfortunately, just like Caveman, it is a bit far to go.
I hope you can pull it off. I cant wait to see the pictures.

I may not be THE Caveman but would A Caveman do?
Preston, I'm seriously considering doing this. I would really like to go to NEAF next year, it is only a 10 hour drive, and I could bring any or all of the scopes in my signature.

Hi Preston! I could loan you a wood boxed, early 60's pre-6te Tasco 50mm refractor on a yoke mount....

While one of my old ATM scopes was made in the early 60's, it is no longer in it's original form. I think it would be cool to have an "ancient" ATM scope there as well. I don't think people realize how the old ATM's made 'everything', from focusers to pipe mounts.
It's just a thought, and I know it would probably be hard to find a scope like this that hasn't been all modernized.

Awesome concept!
NEAF is a bit far from So Cal. But I swear, if you guys do this, even *I* will read the S&T article about NEAF next time!
Be sure to take pics with your scopes and show people that they are still useful scientific instruments, not just quaint toys!

Yup here I am!! I am so sorry that I don't have that Model 166 anymore though. Now what would be REALLY cool would be if someone were to come with a 5 or 6 inch Unitron for all the world to see! I will be at NEAF though as I usually am.

I've a Unitron 510 5 inch F/16 equatorial on an original Field Tripod that has yet not been exposed to anything other than CloudyNights. I'd be happy to transport it from Texas to the NEAF if the opportunity may present. Jim

Gerald,
Your 8" Criterion would be almost enough to get me on the road, and I'm not even a reflector kind of guy. That is one beautiful telescope!

Preston, looks like a few folks are on board with this idea. And Ill bet more will follow. Best of luck
Wish I could make it to NEAF this year but I seriously doubt it for financial reasons. Maybe Lenny will do another video.
