3 1/2 hours more of work, then home to load up my car, catch a few hours of sleep, then drive 1600 miles to the Ft. Davis area. I give myself 3 days driving time so I don't have to rush it. I usually spend the Saturday before TSP in the state park. Maybe I can get some observing in Saturday night if I'm not too tired.

I'm in San Antonio, I got here yesterday evening with no major dramas. My flight from London actually left on time and got into Houston early.
I'm doing a talk at San Antonio Astronomical Association on Friday night and heading out west on Monday morning. Should get to Ft. Davis around 1pm.

I get off an hour or so early from work on Monday. Then my family and I will be driving over with a big camper from Phoenix.
We will spend Monday night about 1/3 of the way to TSP by stopping at the Rancho Hidalgo astronomy site in southwest New Mexico where some of my friends have observatories. Then heading the rest of the way to TSP the next day. Hoping we will check in by mid-afternoon. Yahoo!
I have been into astronomy for almost 3 years now but this is the first truly big star party that I have ever been to. Am looking forward to it Bigtime!

I don't know what the rest of the week holds in store but right now it is fabulously clear but the wind is gusting up over 50 mph. Accuweather is still showing clear all week. I got one good night in so far at the state park and am gearing up for a good one again tonight. I'll head over to the ranch sometime tomorrow after the line disappears. See y'all there!!

Is anyone planning to blog while at TSP? We unfortunates who did get to attend need at least a fix through hearsay! I looked at the McDonald webcams and weather looks great for you at least now. Clear skies and clean glass, Mike

We had a flat tire in the Central Valley that took us 2 hrs to get a replacement for. That got us into LA late enough to be caught in the weekly Friday afternoon evacuation scramble. It cost us another 2 hours.
We arrived Sunday ~1 p.m., & enjoyed a decent night. Seeing was soft, but skies were clear & dark. It's good to see TSP friends again.
CN ice cream social is tomorrow. Leaving the ranch registration area @ 1 p.m. for the Fort Davis Drugstore (which is, indeed, open again).
I've been birding more than stargazing. Spent time on hwy 118 in the wash below Davis Mtns State Park & saw 4 Zone-tailed hawks among ~ 20 Turkey Vultures. Scott's Orioles and Yellow-rumped & Wilson's Warblers are migrating en masse.
I've seen Alvin & Kncklhd.

Gotta love South Texas. I hope I will be able to make it next year or in 2014. Expecting a baby so I dont know if the wife will be up for it next year. Our 1st year anniversary is today, so might have to go for our 2 year next year. Cant wait to see pics and reports.
Clear skies to all of you!!

Mmmm... hot chocolate on the 32F TSP observing field at 4 a.m. ... life doesn't get any better than that! :-)
...oh yeah, we were looking at the Wild Duck, M8, M20 and all the other eye candy as well (my eyes needed a break after doing "list work").

I'm not one who is pleased by other's misery just because I can't be there so I'm happy everyone is having good observing. The migration of Elf owls is amazing. My wife and I have seen one nesting pair almost every year for 5-6 years in the state park and heard one on the ranch one year but never saw it. I guess the earlier date this year caught several bird migrations we don't usually see. Even more rare for the TSP is sub-arc second seeing. Transparency is usually great but the seeing just average. Glad you had one of those very special nights. Clear skies and clean glass, Mike

Repost from yesterday afternoon.
Faith, Alvin, Len Philpot & Robert Reeves (author of the digital astrophotography book) joined Dave McMullen & me for chocolate milk shakes & malts today. Alvin & Faith have the photos.
Last night was another clear, dark, cold night, & the forecast is for this to be the best TSP, weatherwise, of the half-dozen I've attended. Last night's seeing was sub arc-second. Nothing but clear skies in the forecast. Mile-high, low-humidity, black sky conditions. 'Nuff said.
Sunday's poor seeing was due to a massive dust storm we drove through on Saturday between Deming & Las Cruces. Alvin flew over it @ 600 mph, & said it took 15 or 20 minutes to pass over it. I hope he posts his photos. We drove through it, with state troopers & sheriff cars slowing traffic down & guiding us through the worst parts. Sunday's particle count was 1 million ppm, per Jimi Lowery.
Dave & I got his life Elf Owls last night. There was a migratory wave of them that hit the ranch last night. We saw two, and heard another five calling from different parts of the ranch. Last year, a Common Black Hawk pair nested in the Cottonwood Trees about 1/2 mile north of Ft. Davis on hwy 118. We'll give them a try this week.
I didn't stay up late last night, as Madge Linsay, author of Hummingbirds of Texas, was leading this morning's birdwalk. She's leading another on Thursday, and I'm leading Friday morning's birding walk

Dave, Len, & I stayed up until 5 a.m. last night. Len completed his second observing pin objects with Larry Mitchell's challenge list.
I worked with Dave. He found a dozen Messier objects by starhopping with his 100 mm Stellarvue on alt/az mount. Boy's got what it takes.
Prude Ranch looks the same. Same people here. Who needs pix?
When I lived in Tucson, Elf Owl migration got them to Tucson in mid-April.
