For those of you unfamiliar with Chicago, the Adler Planetarium is on a man-made section of land that juts out into Lake Michigan. In the past few months I have joined the "Chicago Astronomer" Joe Guzman at Adler on several occasions where he and other occasional volunteers like me practice informal "sidewalk astronomy" - sharing some of the brighter objects in the night sky with anyone that passes by (a surprising number of people walk out that way at night for exercise or the view of the city).
We had a lot of extra traffic last night because the Adler had a program for scouts, so in addition to the volunteers at Adler with a few small scopes, Joe and I had our scopes set up as well. I didn't get a chance to take too many pictures, as we had well in excess of 200 adults and kids to which we attended throughout the evening!
A few highlights from when we had a couple slow moments - in the picture immediately below, my pier-mounted 5" f/9 refractor is to the left, and Joe's C11 is to the right:

Obviously, we are bathed in outdoor lighting in the area. But we view it as an opportunity - foot traffic doesn't exactly happen in dark-sky areas, at least not the kind that is wanted, in most cases! So when it is bright, and people can see faces and make safety-judgments in the city locations, we can invite curious onlookers to come over and share views of the sky. This sometimes leads to more in-depth conversations where we can discuss astronomy and light pollution, and sometimes just a simple, "Thank you!" and nothing more - and of course, everything in-between.
But I have to say, I enjoy this type of outreach immensely. People who are under the impression that "You can't see anything in the night sky from the city" suddenly have their preconceived notions up-ended, and a whole new world opens up to them. I hope this inspires more people to do this kind or city-sidewalk outreach.

A problem we are working on remedying is the HORRIBLE lighting that is in the area - note the large, bright light behind us (see pic below). It is a bit frustrating that the highlight astronomy location in Chicago has such poor lighting fixtures around it, but apparently the lighting is controlled by the Chicago Park District, not the planetarium itself. So we are working on getting some changes made - though it may take some time!

Attending to a few visitors in our area at a moment when things were a bit 'slow' during the evening - often there were lines of 5, 6 or 8 kids at each scope:

Temps were cool and brisk (fortunately I was nicely layered up and prepared for it!), and the breeze occasionally made it challenging with my "sometimes like a sail" long refractor, but people were overall very excited about the views of the nearly first quarter Moon and Jupiter that we offered throughout the night. The most memorable moment of the night was when three girls, probably around age 13 or 14 came up and were so excited to see Jupiter, there were literally jumping up and down from their excitement. Future scientists, I'd bet.

Holy cow, was that day or night?
I admit when I saw the title I was a bit curious about the venue, but other than the total immersion light therapy, it seems like an outreach magnet. What a great opportunity.
Not only might those girls be future scientists, but even if they don't follow that path, they might remember the enjoyment and expose their own kids to the experience. And even if other folks weren't as openly enthusiastic, I'll bet it's a lasting memory, one visitor at a time.

My wife and I were at Adler about a year ago. They had a couple of scopes set up around lunch time; a PST and an 8" Orion dob with a white light filter. Yes, I went out to take a look. Nice work!!

Ha! Yeah, it might as well be day! But I took those pictures around 8:30 or 9:00pm. Yes... really.

It really is - I first learned about it at the Astrofest Outreach event near at Starved Rock IL this summer from one of the guys camped out next to me. I was so intrigued, I went to Adler the next opportunity that I had. I've done it... three (maybe four?) times now. It's been a lot of fun every time. Unfortunately, that was probably the last outing there until March or April - the cold and wind just get to be too much out there surrounded by the lake as it gets to be late fall and wintertime.

The reactions are truly fascinating - some kids you half-expect to jump up and scream "WOW!" and then they walk away and just shrug and maybe mutter, "Cool." Then the ones you think will do exactly that are the ones who have the the most enthusiastic reactions - I've definitely learned not to pre-judge what people may say or do when viewing. But overall, more were enthusiastic than not, I'd say.

Thanks David! The volunteers who were helping for the Adler event had an 8" Dob out last night, along with what looked like a 90 or 100mm refractor.
My 5" refractor is nothing special - it's an f/9 achromat on a pier I made myself. But it was encouraging to keep hearing, "Wow... Jupiter looks so much clearer in your scope than those other ones!" multiple times throughout the evening.
I imagine those compliments will only get better when I get that scope better collimated!!

Hey Dave, It was good to see you come all the way up north to the city to help inspire city folks to look up. As a volunteer for Adler, we get to showcase the night sky to the visitors using different types of scopes. That nite, we had an Orion 4.5 dob, (2) 8in dobs and 120mm refractor. I always enjoy showing off the little dob that could. Parents are very surprised how much they can see in the city from the little guy. And so affordable too! Belonging to both Adler and Chicago Astronomers, I hope we can join forces to continue showing off the night sky from the heart of the city. Inner city starhopping lives!

Bill, nice to see you again as well! And I should also point out, thank you for getting me acquainted with Joe in the first place.
I must have missed the 4.5" reflectors that were used - when I got there around 6:00, only the refractor and one 8" Dob were set up. After Joe and I got set up, as you know, we were ALL busy (CA's and the Adler volunteers) attending to the scouts and parents who were there!
I am definitely looking forward to joining forces and showing off the wonders of the night sky in the heart of "Light Pollution Central." Hopefully we inspire others to do the same - true, there are not many "faint fuzzies" that elicit "oohs" and "ahhs" from passers-by, but there are enough other objects that are showstoppers to make the effort worthwhile, and get people in cities to think about "looking up."
P.S. - Are you sure the scope you had set up as a 120mm refractor? Sure looked like a fast 90mm or maybe 100mm scope to me - I had my 127mm f/9 set up, and I can't imagine a scope that large set up on the (much smaller than my pier) tripod I saw around 6:00 or so...???

A few more pictures that Joe shared on his site and forum thread for the event (used with his permission, of course! Since I was attending to my refractor for much of the evening, I didn't capture a lot of the people who did stop by - these pictures show that more ably than I captured with my camera - incidentally, that is Soldier Field in the center of the distant background of this picture:

Me attending to a fairly typical-length line of kids that I experienced many times throughout the evening:

Sear - ahem, I mean - "Willis" Tower behind my head, and the Prudential building just to the right and behind Joe's - his C11 in the right side of pic.

More lines of eager and excited observers.

Here's Joe, Barb, and me (with Maria behind the camera). I've learned how to dress quite warmly for events like this:

just last week our club (Northwest Suburbam Astronomers) did a pubic outreach program in Arlington Heights (Suburb of Chicago). We had over 150 folks looking through 12 scopes. Even though the light pollution was terrible we were still able to wow them with views of the moon, Jupiter and a few bright DSOs. Very gratifying.

Hi Gary - do you have any pictures from that event, by any chance? I know a couple of folks who also team up with Joe went to that Arlington Heights event. Since I'm way far south side (around 4.5 NELM, fortunately!), A.H. is a bit far for me to get to, but the reports I read indicated that the lecture beforehand was very good, and that there were a lot of folks out to view the sky with the scopes that amateurs set up.
Thanks for sharing that.

While not quite as light-polluted as Chicago, our club does a monthly sidewalk outreach event right downtown in Market Square of Portsmouth, NH. We schedule it for the Saturday night closest to the first quarter moon. That way, clouds permitting, we always have something to show people even from the bright downtown location, and if Jupiter or Saturn are up it's an extra treat. We have on occasion also showed M42 and double stars, but long lines all night usually mean we stick with just a few objects. We hand out brochures for our astronomy club, and collect donations in a piece of 4" PVC tubing mounted on an alt-az fork mount, disguised to look a bit like a telescope. Amazing how many people try to look through it. I think every astronomy club should consider the occasional "we come to you" event.

Ted, that's great! Glad to know you are doing this as well. And I agree; I hope other clubs will do the same.
