I agree 1000000% with all the above, except one...

Here on CN we've had MANY a discussions about Lens-Pens... I for one will NEVER use one on the scope, or my high end camera lenses...

Although you "CAN" use them, there are specific guides you should follow first. Don't use it to "CLEAN" your optics. Use it only to "buff" out any light haze left from the regular cleaning process. (Refer to your above line about microscopic particles being pushed around)...

Other than that, all words are worth repeating... Again and again!

I've done it. Quick summary:

Assuming you have just the corrector glass and all major debris off, run water over it (wet surface), use classic blue windex, saturate Kleenex (the plain kind) with it and wipe to edge.

Most important part: rinse with distilled/DI water. Just let it air dry on it's side. Do not use dry kleenex to try and dry it faster.

That glass and coat is nothing to be afraid of.

remeber to filter your windex using coffee filters first, via Dr Clay
