LunarMap for Android
      #4934145 - 11/25/11 11:25 AM Attachment (49 downloads)

An alpha test version (expiring at the end of 2011) of my moon map app for Android is here.

This is a very simple 2D app. No libration or terminator. But you can search for features, toggle which features can be seen, adjust colors, and zoom in and out with the volume buttons (or with the zoom buttons.

I am currently checking the copyrights on the LRO WAC mosaic (if it's NASA, then it's public domain, but it may be ASU copyrighted). I downloaded it and it looked gorgeous when plugged into LunarMap.

I am eventually planning a free version and a pro version.

Nice. I went to your website and did not find a list of specs. What is the earliest version of Android that this app will support? Unfortunately, my tablet is only Android 1.5. (But what do you expect for $67?)

The lowest it supports is 1.6. But PM me with your email address, and I'll see if I can build a special 1.5 version.

Well, LunarMap will not work with my Pandigital Novel Tablet. It would not install. Could you possibly change the app to be backward compatible with Android 1.5?

Currently, the one thing that isn't compatible is the zoom buttons. That wouldn't be that hard to change, though it's not a first priority right now. If I release and it's still locked to 1.6, remind me.

p.s. I just posted 0.13. This fixes the map-position bug, adds a longitude/latitude display (optional), improves image caching, and adds two additional zoom levels (these just blow up the 5Kx5K image layer, so they don't include any more lunar detail, but they may make labels easier to read in crowded areas).

Thanks for responding to my post. I'll send you my email through PM. If you can manage a version for 1.5 that would be great, if not don't worry about it.

I bought this tablet on a whim just to see what it could do. Not so much, besides simple viewing of JPEGs and PDFs, and PDF zooming is very slow.

So I might replace it with some other inexpensive tablet but which has a higher version of Android ... until I can get a much better Android tablet or even - gulp! - an iPad 2. That would be my first venture into the Apple world. Apple is still too proprietary and too expensive for my tastes, but it does have the most software at this time. No SD port? No USB? You can't upgrade the memory? So many things right and still so many things wrong.

I made a bunch of updates. Now there are four maps to choose from (one included, three need to be downloaded in-app, at no additional cost in the pro version). Now in beta.

Version 0.23 just uploaded (here):
Android 1.5 support
Tap on feature for basic information and Wikipedia link
Make the disappearing zoom buttons optional (and non-default)
Make the volume-key zoom optional
Add "hard to change" orientation (you need to tilt the device very much to change orientation to the default portrait or landscape orientations; reverse orientations not allowed; this is handy for observing when the device can tilt in all sorts of ways without an annoying orientation change)

Thanks again. I can load version 0.23 on my Pandigital Novel, which has Android 1.5. Other observers who buy the inexpensive tablets like my Pandigital can also use this new version of LunarMap.

I found out yesterday that the code name for Android 1.5 is "cupcake." Appropriate. It is a "cupcake" compared to the latest versions of Android. 1.6 is a little better. It's called "donut."

Alexander,

Would it be possible to have optional inverted (Newtonian) and reversed (SCT, Mak refractor w/diagonal) orientations for the pro version? I have Newts, Maks and refractors, and I use all three at one time or another to look at the Moon, so those orientations would be convenient.

It's already there in both the pro and the lite versions. Menu | Options | Observing instrument. (And for a quick upside-down rotate, there is a hack: just tap on "Southern hemisphere".)

Does this work with the Kindle Fire? If so, is it possible to download the file outside the Android Market since the stock Fire can't access that.

Thanks,

I haven't tested it with it yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't. It has higher specs than my Archos 43.

I'll submit it to Amazon's Market in a couple of days, but it'll take them about a week or more to put it up.

In the meanwhile, there are instructions for non-Android-Market users here.

Alex,

I have two suggestions for what I think would be improvements to LunarMap:

(1) Allow the two-finger zoom control

(2) Instead of linking the labels to Wikipedia, link them to The Moon Wikispaces. The Moon Wikispaces has a ton of interesting information for Moon enthusiasts. It has links to Rukl maps, LACs, geologic maps and LPODs. There are links to images from Kaguya and Apollo missions. A classical description of the feature by Elger is presented. If the item is one of the Lunar 100, a link is given to an article concerning that observing list. Also, each feature on Moon Wikispaces has a link back to Wikipedia.

For example, here are comparative links for the label "Rupes Recta":

Rupes Recta on Wikipedia

Rupes Recta on the Moon Wikispaces

A big and obvious difference, IMHO.

Is there a way that the user can set the preferred website themselves?

I don't have a device that owns a multitouch device and I understand it's hard to debug two-finger zoom without it. It would also require allowing intermediate zoom intervals--currently I allow only zoom intervals for which the images are pre-rendered. Intermediate zoom intervals would probably be slower.

Once we get a Kindle Fire, I might be able to do it, though.

Done for 1.02. Thanks for the suggestion!

I just uploaded 1.03 to the Market, with pinch zoom.

Panning will be a bit faster, however, if you stick to the zoom buttons and don't use the pinch zoom. Still, it might be worth the small decrease in speed. (The reason is that the pinch zoom gives resolutions inbetween the prerendered tiles, and the zooming takes time.)

If you don't like multitouch, you can turn it off.

I also increased the tile cache size which should improve performance on many devices.

I'd like to add satellite feature markers to the HD version. Suggestions on the UI would be welcome. It will look terrible if one marks all the satellite features at once. Maybe just one feature at a time?

Here is something I was thinking about. Currently if you tap on a feature, you get a little info window with the dimensions of the feature and a link to The-Moon Wiki. Maybe instead of a window, I could pop up a little semitransparent info rectangle at the bottom of the screen, and when that rectangle is popped up, the satellite features could be shown?

Yes, that would be better. And/or you could have the satellite features show when the user zooms down to an appropriate image scale, deep enough so that the satellite labels would not clutter the screen.

In 1.05 HD, I added a realtime (only--sorry, no settings yet for a different date) terminator line. It's just a simple line, not a shadow or anything pretty like that, but I found it makes it way easier to find things at the eyepiece.

Excellent! If you could eventually have a realtime terminator - something like VMA or LTVT - that would be even more excellent. For me, that would be worthy of a moderate increase in the purchase price.

I just posted LunarMap HD and Lite 1.11 in the Android Market (or Google Play, as it is now awfully renamed).

- Adds satellite features (e.g., Plato B) [HD only]
- Adds astronaut-named features
- Improves memory handling
- Fixes bug with selection of feature types
- Adds a little more info about feature types

With this reversion, the HD version contains all official 9099 IAU named features.

I will upload to the Amazon Appstore on Monday if all is well.

Alex,

I'm not seeing labels for the satellite features on Lunar Map HD. When I started up the program after going to Google Play, a screen appeared on Lunar Map HD which showed a list of updates. So I assume my copy was updated. I even shut down my Asus Transformer Android, restarted it, ran the program again. No change.

Yes, I dislike Google Play. No, so far I hate it. Android Market would let me know which of my programs have updates and would offer to update them. I don't see that function anywhere on Google Play. Google Play is a step backwards.

Alexander,
I recently tried your LunarMapLite-103.apk and get an unexpected stop error on my cheap panimage android 1.6 tablet while your openstarmap 100-4 seems to work fine. This is puzzling since I thought that the openstarmap was for a much higher OS than android 1.6. This tablet is so cheap that I couldn't even download from the market that came with it!

LunarMap uses a lot of memory to smooth the scrolling. I wonder if that was the issue? You might want to try 1.11, which improves memory handling a little.

When I type in Plato under Search, the program centers on Plato. But there is no Plato B to click on. It's just not labeled on the map. I can zoom in all the way and Plato B still does not appear.

I set detail size to the absolute minimum and get the same results.

When you go to the options, is "Satellite features" checked? And does it say under it "Only in HD version"?

"Satellite features" is not listed under options. So I do not have the latest version? How do I update apps with Google Play?

You run Android Market just as before on your device, go to My Apps, and there should be an update option.

Alex,

I just now updated LunarMaps HD. On Google Play, I had to manually go through my list of installed apps, which is over 100. Luckily, it's in alphabetical order. But the info for LunarMaps HD only shows that I purchased it, not that an update is available. I had to take a chance and press on "Purchased" to update the app. Not intuitively obvious at all! This is not good for consumers, writers or vendors.

Nowhere on Google Play is there any information saying that any apps have an update available. When I would run Android Market, the first thing I saw were notices for updates.

But at least I see the satellite objects on LM HD now.

Mike

Android Market has disappeared from my tablet. Google Play, Google +, Google Whatchmacallit, Google Gizmo, Google ... are there instead.

I think Google is the New Apple. I don't like it.

Are you going to make an .apk file available for the 1.11 version? My tablet is not a supported device on the google market.

You can get the lite version from http://pruss.mobi/dl/LunarMapLite.apk

You should eventually be able to buy the HD version from Amazon's Appstore, but first I want to see what Sarkikos' issue is caused by.

I downloaded the 1.11 .apk file. It installed OK but will not run, I still get the unexpected stop error. I guess my panimage tablet just doesn't have the technical specifications to run all android 1.6 apps. Thanks for the help.

Can you install the Android Log Collector, run LunarMap, and then email me (arpruss@gmail.com) a log from the log collector right after LunarMap crashes?

The log is on the way, I hope. It's the first time I have sent e-mail from the tablet.

I posted 1.13 on Google Play (and in a couple of days it should show up in the Amazon Appstore). The main new feature is the 1971 USGS Geologic Map of the Moon (with a scan of the geologic description, which can be accessed via MENU | Legend). Nearside only, I am afraid.

In the screenshot, the black labels are a part of the official map, and the yellow labels are added on by LunarMap.

I posted a new versions of LunarMap Lite and HD, available in both Google Play and Amazon Appstore.
- HD: nearside NASA Lunar Chart LMP (1976)
- HD: nearside Lunar Chart LPC-1 (1979)
- both (but especially HD): slightly faster startup
- both: fix bug where app went back to last searched-for feature instead of last on-screen location

The maps I added have their own pre-printed labels for the larger features, so LunarMap's labels will overlap them. Sorry about that.

Why don't you add the possibility to import custom maps?

Got the updates today for Kindle Fire and am still happy that I bought the HD version months ago. (Before I joined this forum!) Great work.

I could, but the format isn't very user-friendly, and it takes a lot of work to generate a map. If there is interest from multiple people, though, I can easily add the feature to the HD version.

Download a map from <a href="http://pruss.mobi/dl/lunarmap/">here</a> to your PC. Then change the .lunarmap extension to .zip, and you can unzip the file and see what's inside it.

What you'll find inside it is an index.txt file, as well as lots of jpg files. The jpeg files provide map tiles at five or six different resolutions. So to generate a map, you need a high resolution moon image at a resolution that can be nicely divided up into 640x640 tiles, say 10240x10240 or 5120x5120. Then you divide it up into tiles. Rescale to half size. Repeat until you resize to a single 640x640 tile. And then add a 320x320 tile.

The tile filenames start with "lib" if the image is "librated". This means that it was projected with a modified projection that adds 7 or so degrees of the other side of the moon, so you get coverage for libration. I can give you the formula I used for the projection.

If you want straight orthographic projection, then you just don't start the tile filenames with "lib".

There are some other pieces of information you can include in the index.txt file, such as indicating that it's a map of the farside.

If after looking at all this, you're still interested, let me know. I have all sorts of messy conversion code, too.

But if the source map is public domain (like the NASA / US government ones I use), you may just want to ask me to convert it for you and make it available in the next release.

I've just uploaded version 1.20 to Google Play.

This has some significant optimizations which should make for a smoother (but still not perfect) experience.

Also, I've changed how the Lite version works. The Lite version now has available all the maps of the HD version. However, the Lite version watermarks the screen when you do more than 8X zoom. Previously, zooming past 8X resulted in simply blowing up the 8X image, i.e., pixelation. Now you have the full resolution map, with the annoying word "LITE" on top of it to encourage you to go for the HD version.

It might be a couple of hours before the new version shows up on Google Play.

If all works well, I'll upload to the Amazon Appstore in a day or so.

If you are a Lite user and you really like the previous Lite version (1.14), for at least a little while it's available here.

By the way, LunarMap works great with Bluestacks on a Windows 7 laptop.

They are downloaded to whatever area the Operating System designates as external storage. On my S2, there is an internal SD card and an external SD card, and they go to the internal one.
One can't move them, I am afraid.

I made a bunch of updates in 1.32.2. Is now up in Google Play and should be up in the Amazon Appstore tomorrow or the day after.

1. New Actionbar-based user interface, particularly nice for tablets. Easy icon for switching maps. (Currently you do lose your place. That's a leftover from how it used to work. I hope to fix that.)
2. Memory management improvements.

Unfortunately, the new version's ActionBar support requires Android 2.1. Rather than keep support for the very small number of users with older Android devices (which are likely too slow anyway for satisfactory use), I spun off the free LunarMap Classic, which has all the features of the old LunarMap HD, but is limited to Android 1.6 to 2.0. So if you have Android 1.6-2.0, just get LunarMap Classic. That won't get any feature updates, but if I find an easy bug fix, I may do it.

I have been using this app for over two months now, and this latest update has made scrolling when zoomed in all the way infinitely smoother. Very nice job! This is helping me a TON with locating features for the lunar observing program. Excellent job! I am using the app on a Nexus 10. Keep up the fantastic work!
Edit: The update also fixed a friend's Lunar Maps HD as well, in which on their phone the menu would disappear after displaying it the 1st time.

I just posted 1.35. There are some minor fixes, but the main thing is that you can get a 20480x20480 resolution LRO orbiter map of the nearside. Just press the Folder button to choose the map, and select the LRO WAC hi-res map. The map is a separate 34mb download.

My favorite Lunar app just got even better! The new map is excellent. I especially enjoy LunarMap while I'm using my MallinCam to observe the Moon.

About the only additional feature I'd like would be to have the unilluminated portion of the Moon dark. The current terminator 'line' is functional, but I'd rather have the dark portion covered either by a translucent or opaque mask to match the sky view.

If you enjoy observing the Moon and don't already have LunarMap, get it!

Don

I have a new beta version. If you'd like to test it, email me at arpruss at gmail dot com, or PM me with your email address.

I'd ideally like beta testers who have been using the old version already, though new users are welcome. The new version has some additional optimizations that should make it faster and more responsive.

BUT the down side of the new version is that it requires a re-download of all the maps. Before forcing users to do that, I really want to make sure that the new version is better.

I posted 1.40 to Google Play and Amazon Appstore. I've optimized memory usage and scrolling speed. The downside of the optimizations is that I had to change the map format, which means that you will need to re-download any maps you were using. (It will delete the old ones on startup.) The new maps take up slightly less space than the old ones, though. While I was at it, I added a 20480x20480 LRO map of the farside.

I had a user query me about a vertical reflection mode for SCT+diagonal users. That will be coming in the next release, but in the meanwhile any SCT+diagonal users can just set left-right reverse mode AND check "Southern hemisphere" in the options (or Northern, if you're in the South!)--that should have the same effect.

Very good job Alex, both with the higher resolution LRO map as well as with the optimizations. Pro version now runs considerably better on my Samsung Tab II.

Perhaps I have a little bug: with the USGS Geologic map, whenever i try to turn on the reference labels (second icon from left on the action bar which becames visible only if available on map itself) it crashes, while the map info button on the same map does nothing.

By the way, I've read only now your post about beta testers, and since I use it extensively since more than an year now, I will be glad to help you in the future just in case.

Andrea

Alex, will the new version you refer to above have the ability to show the unilluminated proton of the Moon as dark (hopefully a dark translucent mask so the details are still visible)? That's about the only feature I miss.

Thanks!

Don
