I have a TV 8-24 Zoom eyepiece and was wondering if any one has tried the Zoom eyepiece with the Denk II Binos or any other binos and how did they work. With 3 magnifications already with the Denk's, I thought it would be pretty cool to add that many more powers with just one zoom eyepiece. Will it work?

For day time H-alpha solar viewing my experience with the TV Click stop zooms and Denk Standard bino viewer was far from good. The undercut meant never having a secure grip on the eyepiece, so not a good merging eyepiece. The rubber eyeguard and diameter of the eyepiece meant I was never comfortable. I switched to BGO's ( Orthos ) and was a happy chappie, and now use long fl plossls along with the dual arm power switch and am delighted.
Best Regards
Carl

The TV zoom is a re-badged Vixen, it is the only non-Televue eyepiece they sell (or rather sold , the TV zoom has been discontinued) - I would hesitate to own two of them. Especially if I already had a power switch and lots of other TV eyepieces.

That is about as I expected but was curious if any one was using zoom eyepieces with binos. Thanks for the answers.

They work perfectly fine and the only thing against them is the small apparent field at 24mm but that's what the 24mm Pans are for. The click-stop zooms are best for matching magnification and the image is nice and sharp at all focal lengths.

I just had in mind that may be a way to gain some more powers with out having to changing eyepieces along with the 3 powers in my Denk Power switch. Just seemed like it might be convient.

Phil, those zooms are quite narrow fields of view at the low power settings. Even my Baader zoom is really tunnel-like at anything longer that about 18mm. I don't mind a smaller FOV ( i love my 28 RKE's at 45 degree AFOV), but if it has a huge wall of surrounding black, then that is what makes it look bad to me. I think all the zooms other than the Leica are like this.
You are right though. A zoom plus a powerswitch really gives all the options you could want without having to remove eyepieces for changing ever.

Hey Eric, This idea doesn't sould like it would work that great. Maybe the Denk diagonal with the filter switch on both sides would be a better choice. As I understand it that give 7 powers.
I didn't realize that the TV zoom was discontinued untill reading this post.
Then again I just need to quit being lazy LOL and and swap a few eyepieces.

I have two dual power switches and two OCS options for 3x3x2=18 powers per eyepiece pair (or nine at a time with just one OCS). With my Dob I am able to get as low as 1x barlow and as high as 3.2x barlow effect. I rearely use the top 3 powers, but use the 1x very much to locate objects.

Do you by chance have any photos of this set up. Is your set up the diagonal with dual switches from Denk or did you put this together your self. That would be really cool having all the different powers avalible with out eyepiece changes.

Phil,
FWIW, I have a pair of Zhumell 24-8 Zooms that I've used with success in my Burgess Binoviewer. Even though the Zooms do not have click-stop settings like my Baader Zoom, I was able to merge the images along the full range of magnifications. It was very pleasant for viewing the Moon with my 10" f/4.8 Newt.

Last night, a buddy and I tried out zoom eps on 2 binoviewers. He had Zhumell 8-24 and Orion binoviewer, I had essentially the same Celestron 8-24 and WO binoviewers.
The zoom eps thru cyclops view give pretty "tunnel-like" views. However, thru both the Orion and WO binoviewers, the merged views provided a comfortable "wider" view. We were looking at the Chicago skyline with Celestron ST80 spotting scope. Images were sharp and flat from 24mm to 12mm; images degraded at 8mm. The apartment buidings appeared straight and parallel. My buddy is thinking of getting another Zhumell zoom for his binoviewers.
Note: we both wear glasses.

I have no problem wearing my glasses with the Zhumell Zooms in the binoviewer. Individuals can differ on how much eye relief they need or are comfortable with, however.

A pair of Zhumell 8-24mm Zooms is good and cheap. Hayneedle is always having a free shipping sale or you can Google a coupon for some extra money off.

Here tonight will be cloudy. Tomorrow night, New Year's Eve, will be mostly clear. I might take a small scope out for a little while, but I avoid astronomy on New Year's Eve, for obvious reasons. I have to set up in public areas. Not a good thing on "amateurs' night." The other nights for the next week will be cloudy.

Let me know how that works out for you.........
Since I got the power switch I HATE having to change eyepieces, so if you can figure out a way I can be happy the "old" switch out eyepieces way, PLEASE let me know.
