Happy for you that they turned it off. Hope it stays that way. From looking at the second pic they sure do like their inside ligthts too

Did you sign this letter? Would be a great time to personally thank them and tell them how grateful you are, as in suck up in case it starts to stay on again.

I live next to a neighborhood park. On the far side from us there are three insanely bright 'security' lights. A couple of years ago they left these lights turned off for a couple of months. Not only was it nice'n dark, it was also nice'n quiet. The fact that the park was dark at night also kept people out. You could actually hear groups show up, decide that it was too dark, and leave. All these lights really do is to provide brilliant illumination for people who are not supposed to be there.

There are a couple smaller cemeteries in town that are lit up like day light. They had some vandalism a few years ago and put these huge spotlights that shine out in the road. I suppose if my loved one was there I might feel different but it is such an eyesore at night. Glad I am several miles away. This would a difficult situation to work with.

I'd suggest motion-detecting light fixtures would be better for security. But then it could be like Ernest P. W. checking to see if the refrigerator light is REALLY working.

Pretty sure the majority of house burglaries take place in the day;conversely businesses are burgled at night.Burglars prefer there not be anyone else around while they are "working".
If there really are 500,000 recreational astronomers that ought to be enough to at least warrant officialdom listening.

Had that problem, then called the police and told them there is a exteremely loud disturbance underway once I located the source then passed that informtion on to the very same police. 20 minutes later the assault on everyone's hearing in my area ceased. Someone was playing that mariachi whatever you call it music so loud I can hear it clearly inside my house from over half a mile way is disturbing the peace to say the least. I put my boot down, beause at 11 p.m. it was disrespectful of everyone else.

Just a quick update. Their deck light remains off at night, for which I am very grateful. Today, during my lunch break, I stopped at their home to deliver some chocolate chip cookies I baked last night and a thank you note. The wife answered the door, and I introduced myself as the letter writer. She apologized for leaving the light on all the time. She didn't realize how bright it was. She explained that her husband travels a lot, and they had the light on for security reasons. She said to feel free to call or stop by if they ever forget to turn it off again. I told her I understood, gave her the cookies, thanked her very much and wished her a Merry Christmas.

Now, that I've done that, I really kind of wish I would have delivered the cookies after work. Delivering them at lunch did not give me any time to perhaps explain better lighting options. Oh well. I do feel kind of bad now that I know it was a lonely wife who felt safer at night having a bright light left on while her husband was traveling. Yet another example of the mistaken assumption that more light equals more security.

I feel lucky. My dark site observatory area (I don't live there) has no local lights, and the neighbors don't like yard lights either. Some have gone so far as to say if some newbie moved in and put up a light they would take the necessary steps to eliminate it. What can I say except thanks? Nearest LEO is based 30 miles away, so in small matters people handle their own problems like they used to back in the old west.
