I also have the WoodWonders field case - does a great job for what I need and, sometimes (doing outreach)it's as interesting to folks as what I show through the eyepiece. Extremely sturdy and well made, well thought out and attractive - and I also dont put caps on the ep's... love the red light feature.

Don't forget Goodwill, Salvation Army, yard sales, etc.
Lots of inexpensive cases available from these sources, for pennies on the dollar. Within which one can hide expensive ep's in stealth mode. And affordably upgrade in size when needed.

Post a photo! Nice to see all the variations of the woodwonder cases, and also what people chose to carry in them. 3 compartments or two? Lights? Heated? Outside engravings? Oak or other? Inquiring minds want to know... Actually, I intend to build a clone of one of these sometime when my woodshop warms up again.

Midnight Dan, How difficult is the solid foam to work with? Measure 5 times cut once kinda thing? I could imagine you dont want to make bad cuts.

Hi Dan:

It does take time, planning, and patience. You first need to plan what you want to put in the case and how everything will fit. Once that's done, I drew the cuts on the surface of the foam with a ruler and a Sharpie marker.

One key to success is using high density foam. You want that anyway so it will hold your gear more securely, but it also cuts more easily than softer foam. The other important thing is to use a VERY sharp knife that also has a relatively narrow, long, stiff blade. I used a high quality fisherman's filet knife. I like to do the cutting while I'm watching TV because you need to spend some time to do it carefully.

For the circular holes, I used this technique from a sticky at the top of this forum:
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php/Number/2830238/

For items that did not need the full depth of the foam, I cut all the way through anyway. then I would cut a piece off the bottom of the removed foam slug and place it back into the bottom of the hole.

-Dan

Dan I may have to go with the solid foam. Might be a little more stressful to work with but love the clean look.

I went with padded, adjustable divider set in my Nanuk 930. No need to plan a layout or replace foam which eventually, with me, gets torn.

I use a reciprocating saw case. I ground the inner partitions designed to hold the original tool, keeping only 2 small accessories partitions, to keep my filters and trinkets. I filled the main part with foam and that case has been with me since. One does not have to spend a lot. Some will prefer water/pressure/bullet-proof cases, like Pelican's and the likes. These are expensive, but they do provide a certain level of protection which my solution does not offer. My line of thought: I don't cross raging rivers with my eyepieces, I don't take them on planes, I don't store them in a floodable basement, and if fire burns down my home, I'm insured.

The Orion Filter Wheel is press-fitted in a cutout in the lid's foam, and it never falls out. The bottom foam is from a Computer's packaging. I replaced the black foam I used to have in it for a firmer, white foam.

Does everyone carry their EP case with all of your EPs every time you go observing or do some carry a select few EPs in say a smaller case? Or do you just unload the large case and take what you need? Im leaning toward bringing all of them, but then again I have only 5 so far counting my Powermates....lol

I keep my main sequence of EPs and accessories in my primary case. But I also have a grab-and-go case which is just a camera bag with a waist strap. In it I have the Baader 8-24mm zoom, a 24mm/68° AFOV Baader EP, a barlow and a couple of filters.

The contents of these bags don't generally overlap, but I do sometimes pull a specific item out of the main case for grab and go on occasion.

I'm not going out with any less than my entire kit .
It seems silly to me not to take the whole kit and be kicking yourself in the ars as seeing conditions can dictate an optimum combination at any given time . And keeping everything in its place helps with staying on top of where things are if they are where they belong . I spend enough time going around in circles wondering wher I put stuff without scattering things about into different locations .

I tried several approaches and finally settled on a bunch of these little dual pistol cases sold at just about every sporting goods store in the country. Less than $10 each so I have 6 of them. Did not like the foam in the bottom of the cases though, so I ordered some of the Pelican foam to replace it. (http://www.foamerica.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1622)

What is in my case comes out every time I'm observing.

Here's what does not reside in a case, but that I do own:

32mm Omcon Plössl
6mm "Circle K" japanese Kellner
5mm Celestron Ultima (Vintage)
8~24mm Skywatcher Zoom
40mm Celestron E-Lux Plössl (1"¼)
25mm Celestron E-Lux Plössl
25mm GSO Super Plössl
38mm Orion Q70
56mm Meade Super Plössl

The last two are recent acquisitions. The Q70 38mm and 56mm Meade Plössl which are not in the case, actually also follow me at every outing. I'm very likely to replace these two with a 35mm Pan sometime this spring.

The rest never follows me; The kellner and Ultima were ill-advised acquisitions, and the others are left-overs from various transactions involving OTAs.

Lane,

I understand the reasoning for 6 cases and they look great, but I was wondering how you have them 'Cataloged' for use.

Do you have a certain case for certain viewing conditions or scope?

Stan

This is what I use, it's available from "Smart Astronomy" for about $30.00. It only holds a few oculars to have closeby, instead of dragging my whole case out into the field!!! I just have the ones I plan to use at hand!
Very convenient!!!

Lots of good insights here to these questions.
With only a few ep's, yes to bringing them all.

I too have found it best to bring any along I'm likely to use. Truly likely to use.
Because we can all end up with some poor working ones that we ought not to have gotten.
But once it's figured out which ones they are, it's time to leave them out of the working case(s)
There is no real need to carry them out every time, re-trying them periodically, over and over.

At the same time, having ep's segregated into cases by sets, for certain scopes will work too.
There are ep's that work great in long slower scopes, or are a good match for some other type ota.
Keeping those ep's together can make using those scopes easier.

As might be deduced from my suggestion of cases from secondhand stores, my cases are also not of the waterproof/bulletproof/airtight flavor.
They are just dew/frost resistant, have some desiccant packets/containers kept in them, and look like nothing of any value to anybody.
I no longer rack or tray ep's when out at the scope, so they are not put away wet.
The desiccants kept with the ep's are for my comfort, as my working ep's are stored with my scopes at ambient temperatures.
