Suh-WEET Sixteen...!
      #5011415 - 01/10/12 10:14 PM Attachment (98 downloads)

Here are some of my "small glass" / narrow angle ~16mm favorites!

I want to hear from other CN'ers out there: which ones have you tried and liked the best? Why? If you don't currently have a piece in this class, which one would you like to "take to the dance"?

I'd like to try the Meade. It has been months since I saw one anywhere - think it was ebay and it went for a pretty steep price.

I had a mint Meade 16.8mm RG Ortho with box and sold it. It might of been my favorite Ortho ever. Images were so sharp and very high light transmission. I love the volcano type top-very lightweight. I have currently a U.O.16mm Konig "Mushroom top" that is hard to beat also.

Actually, that's a "MEADE" not a "Meade". Says so right on the barrel.

This is a "Meade":

Wow!! What a sweet set I've only peered through the Brandon and the ZAO. Did not have them together and never did any critical evaluation of them so cannot comment. However, would be quite curious how the Clave performs relative to the pack.

Keeping it strictly "16", here are few more sweet items you should track down for the collection:

16mm Meade 3000 Plossl
16mm UO Super Erfle
16mm UO Konig

I hade both UO's at one time, but, sadly, I had to cull the herd somewhere...!

I have not viewed through the Clave...yet.
I am told it confers a coffee tint on bright targets that would make Uncle Al "green" with envy!
This is especially useful when viewing Jupiter - it makes the cloud features stand out more. In addition, this is a true Plossl, not yet another symmetrical. This along with nice polish (low scratch/dig) ensures great near - on - axis performance, and contrast.
The 16, along with the 12, hits the "sweet spot" in this series.

These are very nice! The UO came from the same source that gave us the fine Gailands and Criterions. In fact, you can put equivalent focal lengths from any two of these choices in a binoviewer, and they will work just fine.

It seems that everybody is trying to put together a set of these. Some of the prices realized have been eye-popping!

I would gladly take the Monocentric "to the dance". How does it compare to the Zeiss Abbe II?
