More AGC or more integraton?
      #5019210 - 01/15/12 04:33 PM

On the Mallincam, which gives more detail - more AGC or more intgration? I am on an alt/az mount so my integration times are limited to about a minute (depending of where in the sky I am pointed). I took a picture of M042 last night and all of the outside region looked great but the very heart of the Nebulae was washed out. This was with just 3 seconds integration time which is the lowest my Mallincam can go. I am using the 11 inch SCT which has been reduced to about f/3. Thanks.

More gain adds more noise. more integration adds star trails if your mount does not track well.

I think the problem is the range of brightness/contrast = dynamic range. You can't expect one exposure to capture all. If exposing for the middle then outer will be too dark and if for the outside then middle is overexposed.

james,

do to the difference in the range you really need 2 different exposure times to view m42 properly and then stack them. but to answer your question, agc/int time..for me it all comes down to what i am trying to look at. 75% of my xtreme use though is in ccd mode..less noise but longer int times..probably not useful for your alt/az configuration.
