Binocular Repair Manual - any suggestions ?
      #5020934 - 01/16/12 02:46 PM

Can anyone suggest a good binocular repair manual that could serve as a good generic reference book for a personal library and guide for repairs, cleaning, etc...?

I have an old binocular that is a good candidate for rip down and rebuilding. It would be better to attempt rehabilitation even if just for the learning process, instead of merely tossing them out.

Thanks for any suggestions.

These two aren't perfect but are still pretty good for the basics.

Alii Service Notes on Binocular Repair which can be found at:

Seyfried, J.W. (1995) "Choosing, Using & Repairing Binoculars". University Optics Inc., ISBN 0-934639-01-9
Often available on eBay.

This is another interesting book.
But unless you have a collimator, perfect alignment will never be achieved, although it may look perfect to your particular IPD.

Deja vu.

G. Dallas Hanna in Amateur Telescope Making, Book II, from Willmann-Bell in Richmond Virginia. Or in Vol 3 in the original publication, via several printings, from Scientific American.

The Navy book Basic Optics and Optical Instruments, reprinted by Dover and soon to be available again from them in a new printing, they said in an email to me ,during the time of the huge "collimation" /alignment thread a few months ago.

I like the Navy books too, but those I have only deal with binoculars with independently focused eyepieces. At least up to the point when my books were published, the Navy didn't use any with bridge focusing mechanisms.

In 1966, there was a copy of a book by Bill Waldeyer at the Xerox Technical Library in Webster, N. Y. . I made a copy .

He covered many nuts and bolts topics, for several constructions, including the one you mention, but backed away from any meaningful description of equipment/methods to achieve 3- axis parallelism. But he was no doubt familiar with at least the Navy methods.

He worked at Mare Island and/ or the Calif. Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, as part of/the foreman of the binocular overhaul team described by Hanna op. cit.

I tried to find him in the San Francisco phone book in the late 1960's or early 1970's, with no result. He had a binocular repair shop somewhere in San Francisco postwar.
