SN 2012A, a supernova in Leo new

For those interested, there's a new supernova in Leo. At this point it's rather faint, below 13th mag, possibly mag 13.4. This is SN 2012A located within the Galaxey NGC 3239. Its coordinates are: RA 10h 25m 07s.38, Dec +17deg 09m 14.6s. You can check the Deep Sky Observing Forum for more info. You can download observing charts from the AAVSO.

Hi RLTYS, is there an estimate as to what will be the brightest magnitude/when will it be reached?

Here's my image from early this morning via tiny piggybacked Meade ETX-70 unfiltered - my estimate mag 13.7 - data on image This is my 3rd pic over last few days and SN seems slightly brighter this morning

I don't think there is any way to know how bright SN 2012A will become. We'll just have to wait and see.

Nytecam, I took my first images of SN 2012A last night (1/15) using the Slooh remote observatories on the Canary Islands. I've not had a good look at the images yet and haven't made a mag estimate. I will be posting images.

Here is my first image of SN 2012A. Nytecam, based on my image I'd say your estimate of 13.7 for SN 2012A seems acurate.

It seems to have a slightly blue appearence in color. If I'm correct, possibly an indicator that it's definitely in the start of its light-curve, and will later begin to cross over to being a bit more red (?) after peak brightness.

Great images everyone, I hope to see this new supernovae as soon as I possibly can, given that the weather permits it. I've had complete overcast the past few weeks. It only adds to the eagerness to get out and do some much-needed and valuable observing time.

Clear skies,and I hope to see more images following the progression of this event in the future,

Here is an image of SN 2012A taken on the 19th. It appears to have faded slightly. This was confirmed by the AAVSO LCG. Unfortunetly SN 2012A never got brighter then mag 13.4.

Christian Buil has some spectra here showing evolution over 10 days.

This would also be a good target for Star Analyser /Rainbow Optics type spectrographs if you have reasonably dark skies

I took another shot at SN 2012A last evening and I still have to check, but it looks like it continues to hover around mag 13.7.

I was doing some photometry on a minor planet in Gemini early this morning and decided to slew over to SN2012a when I finished. Based upon the AAVSO reference chart for this region, the following magnitude estimates (n=10 in each bandpass) were calculated:
Bmag = 14.77 ± 0.09
Vmag = 14.01 ± 0.06
Ic mag = 13.48 ± 0.1

Equipment:
OTA - Classic Orange (1972) C8
Camera - ST402ME (1 min exposures)

The attached image is through the Ic photometric filter.

I imaged SN 2012A last evening (4-22) for the first time in a month and this SN has faded considerably. I estimated its mag at 15.9.

Greetings,
The last post in my blog (below) deals with my recent visual observation of this SN (and the one in M95). It is curious that we have two SNs now in the same galaxy group. Although it is a sizable group, I think there are only a dozen decently sized galaxies there at best, so statistically the simultaneity it is still remarkable.
