Auto guiding with a C6
      #5045035 - 01/29/12 09:55 PM

Guys, had a few frustrated nights and not sure if i am doing everything correctly. Here is what I am doing:

SSAG installed on a C6 with a focal reducer
PHD for guiding

I just can't seem to find a star in the PHD window. I tried to focus many times.

The focal reducer is installed on the SSAG and fully inserted into the C6.

What could be wrong?

I am using default PHD settings. It can find scope and camera successfully.

Help please!

If you have focused by eye the point of focus for the SSAG will be in from this point by about 20mm (if memory serves). I would set up on Polaris, which is bright enough to be visible even when it is slightly out of focus. It does not take much defocus to make a star invisible.

Also there is a setting (gain?) on the main screen of PhD that darkens the sky background somewhat. Are you looping exposures? No exposure, no star.

You should do a test in daylight focusing on some distant object to verify focus.

I am afraid that C6 would be a huge pain for guiding. A lot of folks, including myself, guide with converted 50mm finders and it is more than enough for scopes less than 1000mm FL. I used to have a 70mm F5 scope for guiding and it was already a pain. Problem is exactly as you describe - very hard to find guide stars. With 50mm finder I have about 1* FOV which guaranties that I always have at least one good guiding star in the FOV.
