Just Wanted to Say Hello
      #5054814 - 02/04/12 10:23 AM

My name is Shawn and I just wanted to stop by and say hello! I currently have an ETX 60 and I really enjoy using it. I am wanting to purchase the 10" Meade LX200 ACF to replace my current scope.

Hello Shawn and Welcome to Cloudy Nights.

I have zero experience with the type of telescope you're looking to buy ( i know a bit about newts and i'm learning about a refractor i have ) but it seems like a nice one so best of luck to you with one of those.

Howard

The Meade 10" is a great scope, particularly if you prefer goto object locating rather than having to find things yourself. With 10" of aperture it will blow your ETX60 out of the water. It does have three drawbacks compared to the ETX that you are probably well aware of. It has a much smaller field of view, so no more framing the Pleiades. It weights about 500 times more than the ETX60 (exaggerating obviously but make sure you check out the Heaviest Component weight if you have any concerns about your back). And it costs a heck of a lot more than the ETX60. You may find you want to keep the ETX 60 around as a grab-and-go scope for the nights when you don't want to deal with the big scope. My only real caution other than weight is that you are essentially going from college baseball straight to the major leagues. Most people have an intermediate step in between, but the 10" Meade does use a similar hand controller to your ETX so the learning curve should be minimal.

Welcome Shawn! Sounds like an awesome step up! As mentioned, make sure the weight doesn't keep you from using it. My brother has an 8" Meade that has lanquished because it's just so heavy to move. I keep trying to talk him into getting something like a Scopebuggy or Wheelie Bar so he can roll it in and out with ease. That might be something you want to consider unless you are going to set it up in an Observatory.

Of course, you might be some young kid and the weight doesn't really mean anything to you like it does to us crusty old observers!

Hello! Shawn.

You are fortunate to be in central Texas. The skies are really dark out there. While driving on highway 290 toward Austin to catch a plane I say the Orion Nebula with my naked eye while driving.

Welcome to CN. I started out with a Meade 8 inch SCT and loved it. I earned the Astronomy League Master Observer award with that scope. The skies the limit with a 10 incher. Good Luck!

Welcome to CN. I spent many nights travelling down I-45 and Hwy 287 between Dallas and Palestine. Great dark skies out that way.

Welcome to CN, a great place to spend time when you can't get out under the stars.

Welcome, Shawn. I'm not personally familiar with that scope. The Central Texas Astronomical Society has three public star parties coming up this Saturday. You often see some SCTs at those.

Best wishes,
Bob

Well it has been just over a year and I finally purchased a scope. It was not 10" acf I was shopping for, but it was a deal I just could not pass on.

I got the Meade 8" LX200R (Made in 2006 I believe) and a whole slew of extras to go with it! The scope looks brand new and seems to work great.

I am currently working on loading the Autostar program onto my Dell laptop and just ordered the USB to Serial adapter from Parallax Inc. This scope seems to have huge learning curve to it, but I can see once I figure it out then I could probably go to any of the LX models and run them. Once I get the scope connected to my laptop I hope the Autostar program will make more sense.

First night out, a couple of weeks ago, I observed Jupiter and the Orion nebula. I have not been up early enough to catch Saturn through my 8" yet. I also want to find galaxies, but I am not having much luck there either. I have skimmed the manual but I need to go back and learn to use the Auto align function soon, because I've yet to get it aligned properly where it'll slew right to Jupiter or any other object at that.

After moving this scope in and out of the house I am happy I got the 8".

Some of the equipment I recieved with the scope was the Meade 4000 eyepiece set and filters. A 6.3 focal reducer, Meade 5000 26mm eyepiece, and DSI pro 2 monochrome ccd camera with Autostar suite program. Now I just have to learn how to use it all!
