I again looked at the eye lens coatings of the RKE and in the dim light, it looked as though there was a faint purplish gleam down deep within the barrel...under house lights the lens looks clear but outdoors at certain angles it looks slightly purple after all.

Nice report!! Glad you are enjoying them. I had them out in daylight today, and was seeing exactly what you described with the apparent coatings. Not visible indoors, but in sunlight the faint purple is there.

Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the coating can be a bit tricky to see under different lighting. It functions really well keeping colors true. I didn't have any problems with ghosting, just keeping the correct distance from the eye lens at times, but that would have been easier if I'd had a chair with me...I will next time, plus an extension to raise the ht. of the AT Voyager mt. so no contortions.

I'm holding off on the 28 RKE for now and getting a 25 Sterling Plossl. By the time I paid shipping and got an eyeguard for it the RKE comes in at $82 vs $45 for the Plossl. Also the powers I'll get with my barlows will be more useful with the Sterling. I will get a 28 RKE down the line. David

An eyeguard? You mean the light-blocking thing to keep your eye at the right distance? The RKE comes with one of those.

Maya, is that really a picture of you with an owl on your shoulder?? Or have you been photoshopping? (Or is it something else entirely?)

I meant to say eyecup not eyeguard. Someone in this thread said you have to get one from Edmund and gave a link to it. It cost $11 as I recall. David

They ship with eyecups. Not attached. You do that yourself.

I think it was the caps that were extra.

Yup. I once tried using the supplied eyecup, but it sort of took away from the floating effect.

that "floating stars" effect is really neat.

That's the fun part for me! Thank-you for the nice enthusiastic report.

I think it's been stated on Cloudy Nights in the past, but looking through the 28RKE is kind of like looking at a patch of sky through a magnifying glass. For me, the effect is most apparent when first changing from another eyepiece.

I can hardly believe these RKE eyepieces were hiding in plain sight all these years.

Thanks for all the first-light reports from everyone.

That would have been me. Edmund calls it an eyeguard, and one is supplied with the 28mm RKE. Extra eyeguards are available for $10.95 plus s/h.

My previous detailed post re: eyeguards, with link, is on page 10 of this thread, if using the standard 20-post-per-page setup.

I used mine for a little while last night, but I couldn't form much of an opinion about it with that big searchlight beaming down on me. I'll try again once the moon moves out of the night sky.

Good news as to 28 the RKE coming with a eyecup!
Gives me an excuse to get one sooner than later. David

Hmmm... You could use it to view the Moon.

Just a quick update. I did test for scatter with bright objects just outside the field, and noticed no problems at all. With Jupiter, Venus, and Mars, all I saw were diffraction spikes from the secondary holder leading the way into the field, but no field brightening beyond that. With Rigel & Sirius, there were no issues - nothing telegraphed the arrival - they just appeared in the FOV.

With the moon, I noticed the typical slight brightening of the atmosphere in the moon's immediate vicinity before it entered the FOV, but did not experience any derogatory effects. With the UOs, the entire field brightens significantly to a light-yellow before the moon enters the FOV. There was nothing like that with the 28mm RKEs.

I will say after using these a few nights they have taken the number one spot as my favorite lunar eyepieces. I'll be ordering at least the 21s and 15s in the near future, and will more than likely finish out the set with the 12 & 8s as well.

They are excellent on Jupiter and Mars as well, but the color tone of these is so cool they do slightly wash out the rich warm colors of these two targets. Jupiter appeared nearly white, however there was massive amounts of detail present.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I took out my the 1 1/8"FL Edmunds eyepiece this evening with a 60mm f/16.7 Carton Refractor. Inspired by this post, I thought I'd would take it out and give it a spin against a 32mm Meade 4000 SS & a 32mm TV SS (NJ) Plössl. The only variable is which eyepiece "dissappeared" the most, my previous photos of the size of the housing have really NO bearing on what you actually see at the eyepiece... The Edmund's leaves very little of the eyepiece left to be seen when in use, followed by the 4000, then distantly followed by the TV. It was really no contest the Edmunds blew them away. When I was readying the Edmunds eyepiece to take out, I noticed a little dust on the field lens... One thing lead to another, so I took it apart. It is not an RKE or a symetrical, but more of a straight up Plössl, see below.

Enjoy,
Jaimo!

For everyone that is interested - look at Jaimo's exploded view of the 1 1/8 Edmund compared to the exploded view of the Edmund Optics/Edmund Scientific (they are identical design). Notice the eyelens element is the same on both sides:

Yup. Little known facts: The pictureed older Edmunds actually pre-date the RKE and are "true" Plossls, not symmetricals. The only other "true" Plossls I have are my Claves.

I've often wondered why nobody offers "true" Plossls anymore. The old Edmund is an excellent eyepiece, well worth tracking down.

Jeff

If someone has the current Edmunds 28mm Plossl, would be interesting to see that one taken apart to determine if just a symmetrical or if they are using the old formula.

Link.

Rick -- that's me! The snowy owl was a guest at a raptor rehabilitation center I once worked at -- raptors often quickly become accepting of their caretakers. He was really special. I Photoshopped him onto my shoulder.
