Maybe similar to the orange soil found by Apollo 17? Glass beads, formed in an ancient eruption.

I wonder how much enhancement they did to the colors on that image. Having said that, I agree with Tom. Its time to start sending sample recovery missions.

Mercury has always seemed a little tawny to me - I once saw it in the same high power field of view as Venus and it was quite ruddy in comparison. Of course it's not very high in the sky so some of that is low hanging murk. However, even with the naked eye in a mostly dark sky, it does appear leaden, like Saturn.

Newton crater is relatively fresh; the impact could easily have unearthed (unmercuried?) some "orange soil" created in a much older volcanic event.
