Meade ETX 80 reasslemly help
      #5101759 - 03/02/12 08:10 PM

I am putting an ETX 80 back together after the stupid cheap worm gear plastic arm broke for the SECOND time. The worm gear assemblly has a little metal clip thing that slides into place, it looks like it could either rest against a pot metal post and act as a spring or go OVER the post and act as a clip.
Anyone know which it is?
Here is a link to a pic of a broken one, not mine, but you can see the post and metal clip/spring.

acts as a spring. It presses up against the post. It keeps the worm engaged with the worm gear. Do not be tempted to ceate more pressuse by bending or spacers. The worm gear is not a true hobbed gear and the way it is cut the worm tries to ride up. too much pressure the gear bends down and the worm rides up and over the gear. May be some of your trouble. The spring sould the worm centered on the worm gear with a very slight pressure.

Awesome thanks. There seems to be a bit of pressure generated by that "spring". I think I have more than very slight pressure, but I don't see how you could adjust it other than squeezing that "spring" with a pair of pliers or something.

Edit: I got everything back together and did a test align in the house, just to see the motors working. Alt seems to be working ok, but as the scope turns at max speed, it makes a
tick.....tick.....tick.....tick.....about a second apart. Something is obviously not where it's supposed to be.

I got to test out my fix last night, did alignment and went to M42, then M50, then M81 and 82, all were in the FOV of my 20mm Titan...WOOT!
Although, the ticking is still there, sounds like a wire is riding on the worm gear and jumping once a second....sigh....will be taking it apart again.

Hello, were you able to fix your etx 80? I appear to be having same issue but I have not tried to open it up yet.
