From the Era of the coolest labels ever made. From the cars to the Telescopes the labels from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s really are something to behold. A big plus, the Optics in this Tinsley are very close to perfect. Very low color, high contrast with a spot on star test. Hard to beat,,

Hi All...

This is the new APM 152 ED APO, arriving yesterday, and I just rushed back from oversea tonight to check on the delivery item, and is now on my GM8 losmandy mount...

This is the 1st sample that has been on display at the recent Tucson astronomy show and is s/n 2.

Incidentally, I've read of refractors being currently manufactured and sold as "eco-friendly", and as though one would ever end up in a landfill in the first place. I could never imagine a fine refractor dispensed with in such a manner.

It's no more than a marketing ploy, with yours a proverbial "proof in the pudding".

Eco friendly has to do with production, i.e. powdercoat tube instead of wet-painting, recycled aluminum, etc.

I think what they mean by "eco-friendly" is that no "Hazardous Chemicals" were used in the production of the glass.

Yes, the optics, as I would expect those aspects of the assembly that are actually handled to be so, but the optics?

Tubes are discarded, but ordinarily not the optics.

Besides, we might just need every last bit of the toxicity resulting in the latter's manufacture to coax out that final stroke of detail when observing.

Hi All....

This is another photo of the newly arrived 152 APM ED APO that I set it up last night, onto my G11 losamndy mount.....

If weather permits, I will be doing the outdoor 1st light for this new scope....either this coming Friday and Saturday.....

The Classics are more than likely filled with lead paint and asbestos and maybe even Mercury or Saturn gets in the mix!!

Nice use of those acetylene tank bottles there.

Clint you're right on when you say the '60's were the likely cut-off point for classic performers. I don't know which is more rare. Your streamlined Tinsley or my Tasco 20TE? For all newbies on board but who are old enough to remember the old ads. Here is my old Tasco from the '60's.

Here's the whole enchilada. This is a side by side comparison for scale with an 80mm Selsi below it. Kinda' big huh?

James - is the dew-shield retracted there? I'm curious as to the balance point when the dew shield is fully extended.

Ok, I'm just a poor boy from Colorado and can't afford a multi-thousand dollar APO. But I put this together recently. I found a 6" f/5 Optico objective in cell on Ebay for $35, a AR6 focuser here at CL for $35. Connected the two with a piece of 6" ID PVC pipe.

It makes a nice little rich field scope. Under low power stars and nice and crisp pinpoints. From my light polluted suburban backyard I could see a hint of the arms and dust lanes in M31. M42 was a nice green cloud and the trapezium separated nicely. On the negative side, it doesn't take magnification much over 100x very well, and CA is bad on bright objects. Jupiter had a nice violet halo around it the other night. Oh well, for about $100 invested I can't complain.

Still waiting for some flocking from Protostar to see it that helps with contrast. I mainly have cheap eyepieces too, stars were the most crisp through my old Celestron Orthos.

I really admire folks who build there own.
I'm useless at such things.
Bet you had a lot of fun making it too.
I wonder if a CA fringe killer filter might help with the purple halo.

Hi Mike....

Yes, looks like this new 152 APM ED APO is my birthday present.....
I took annual leave yesterday , for my birthday , as well as to inspect and check on this new scope arrival....
This will be my test comparison against my 8" Istar, and I will comment further in the other forum...
