Saturn Obs 15 March 2012
      #5125423 - 03/16/12 12:31 PM Attachment (40 downloads)

After I finished with Mars yesterday morning, I still had energy left to make this sketch of Saturn (I had taken the day off from work). With the ring tilt at ~14.5°, the rings are revealing a little more detail.

The Ringworld is lower in the sky than Mars and the seeing wasn't quite as good, but I was able to see a fair amount of detail. I could not detect the storm (known as the NED)that was raging in the northern hemisphere last apparition, but images still show it faintly. I think that the most visible part of the storm had rotated around the limb by the time of my observation.

I was also treated to the sight of 4 moons--Dione preceding, Rhea to the south of the disk, and Tethys and Titan following respectively. Enceladus was just north of the preceding side of the rings but I did not detect it, probably because of the glare of the rings and because the last quarter moon was rising.

The sketch was done at the ep with 2B and HB graphite pencils and a charcoal pencil (for the shadows) on copy paper. Template courtesy of Sol Robbins.

Saturn is as lovely as ever.

Thank you, Eric. Saturn is such a beauty with those rings, it's always a pleasure to observe it.

Michael,

Excellent sketch of Saturn. Very nice sketching under less than perfect conditions. It really is nice to see the rings opening again.
I have sketched Saturn without Sol's template and that never comes out so well. For Saturn the template is the best way to go.

Frank

Thanks, Frank. Yes, Saturn is so elegant with those rings that it demands a nice template. I wonder what they did in the old days B.C. (Before Computers)? I've seen some really nice drawings from 100 years ago.

Michael,

An excellent observation and report of Saturn. You recorded some interesting detail over the globe and rings. As Saturn rises higher in the sky more detail should be visible in the future. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
