After reading your post I tried to see it for myself. I was no succesful. I needed a quite high magnification with my 12 inch Dob. So I could not see both of them in one field of view. But I tried ist at least.

At that time I knew Mars was pasing M95 and M96. When the SN was announced most of the astrophotographers complained about the brightness of Mars... I saw it rather as an opportunity. And for once the clouds were kind to me But I was not aware of the rareness of the event.
