Hi all,
I've been able to blow out some cobwebs of late. Ment I could give my new 11X70 binos a go.
Such a wonderful time of the year for wide field views. Binoculars are a great way to take in so much of it.
I thought I'd do a sketch of the rich area between Eta Carina and the huge open cluster NGC 3532. My most detailed charts show at least a further 6 open clusters that sit within this area. It is magnifacently lacey and mottled in appearance - even from my backyard in Sydney.
The challenge with this sketch is to attempt to reproduce some of that mottled texture on the page. Almost like working with shades of dark and darker, . It will be awesome to use these binos at a dark site.
I hope you enjoy this sketch too.
Alex.
Object: Area from NGC 3372 to NGC 3532 Gear: 11X70 binoculars FOV: 4.5degrees Date: 23rd Feb. 2012 Location: Sydney, Oz Media: White pastel, black charchoal and ink on A4 size paper Duration: approx 2hrs

Thanks Brandon. I was also surprised to be able to make out so much detail in Eta Carina, such as the dark lanes, the Keyhole and the distinct shape of the lobes.

Thst is a masterful sketch of one of favorite DSOs. I particularly like the way you have captured that impressive band of dark matter.

Alex, it's funny that last night I was also observing Eta Carina and NGC 3532. I found them with my 10x42 and also used my XT6 at 50x for each one. Your sketch is just like I saw it in the binos.
I have seen your sketches in Ice-in-Space and they are really super.

Alex,
Just tremendous and delightful to view. I love the details of the lanes and the variance in the stars.

Alex,
A beautiful and grand vista full of objects I would love to see directly. Your sketch is like being there behind the eyepieces.

Hello Alex,
Congratulations with your magnificent sketch! Those binoculars cover a wide field with lots of stars. The background brightness does indeed play a major role in the making of such a binocular sketch. You did a great job.
Clear skies,
Rony

Thank you all for your comments. So very complimentary.
One effect I really wanted to relay was the striking brightness of the background glow. While the overwhelming majority of stars in the field are unresolved and individually invisible, their cumulative glow is so intense. I just hope that I've been able to give that effect through the sketch against the black of the area outside the "ring of death" circle.

Most excellent! Reminds me very much of some of the great work done by astronomers shortly before photography came onto the scene.

Your sketches have an incredible lifelike quality, I know exactly how the FOV looked. That is a beautiful patch of sky, it reminds me of the binocular views of Sagittarius from a dark site. Great job!

Many thanks for your comments.
Tenth, you've given me a new target for a next wide field sketch,
Roland, I have a long way to go to match you highly "illuminated" work. Very fluid, lyrical and ornate your work is.

While I appreciate the compliment, yours is good. Just so happens my wife really really wants to see Australia, and we have friends there. Who knows...maybe we will get to observe and sketch one day in the same vicinity. In the meantime, love those sketches from down under.
